yes, even though ppl talk of reunification north & south ppl would be very distant with each other.
one of my teachers last yr was talking about how defectors usually have crappy jobs and a person would never invite a northerner to dinner.
i think a lot of it also stems from not wanting to be accused of being a communist spy or something... |

Already happening. While there are no official stats, rumour stats suggest that NK's economy is 40% dependent upon that of the south. |
Ah, but with reunification, we will see actual slave conditions for the Northerners, I think. The way that some of the foreign workers (not English teachers!!) are treated here, I can see that being a starting point for South Koreans in their dealings with N.K.. It' will just get worse, since they will find out that ALL N.K. is poor, uneducated, unable to stand up for themselves(years of brutal dictatorship), and willing to work for peanuts because it's better than starving or working the family farm. |

i agree, i think its far better to delay reunification until the north has been allowed to catch up econimically. |

I think the only way to keep that (extreme discrimination) from happening would be to make a few draconian laws, like the ones they have in Quebec with regards to French and English. Some complain about those too, but they do a good job keeping French the majority in a province surrounded by English Canada + the US, and in Korea they would need to enact some pretty strict anti-discrimination laws. While they're at it they could make some others regarding male/female discrimination, like the practice of asking for pictures on a resume as well...
But it is true that they never really liked each other that much from the start; don't forget that 16 or so centuries ago Koguryo in the north was fighting against Baekjae, allied with western Japan (Wae, or however it's spelled in English). |
