I replaced the CPU fan on my P 2.4b last week. It was a good idea to do so. This aftermarket one is much quieter, and is adjustable. Now I don't have to take the side of the case off to Encode DVDs without overheating!
I'm not a fan of the noisy fan setup that came from Intel.
Now if I could just quiet those three noisy GeForce 4 TI fans.
Anyone tried one of those heat-pipe setups for that? |

If your case fans are set up correctly, taking off the side panel will actually do nothing for your temps...mine go up. It makes the case fans redundant.
The cooler fan is paramount, but good airflow through the case (front to back) is also very important, and very overlooked. |

My case was a cheappee E-machines case. There isn't even a place in the back for a fan, much less for the front. There is only a square cut-out grill thing that doesn't fit any fans. Sort of a special setup where E-machines used their own air flow channel to the processor, I think. Only I don't have that. I had to construct my own now with the new fan, and it works well.
Before that, in my case, taking the side of the case off made a great deal of difference. |

Speaking of fans, I have four in my case as you know Demo. One is on the graphics card, one is the one I bought and put in myself, one is over the CPU and there's another which seems to have been in the case already.
Do I need all of these. Could I disconnect the one that came with the case or is it meant to run in addition to one you purchase anyway? |

If it's too noisy, then I'm sure it wouldn't be too much of a problem, although we are going through some pretty high temps these days....the ambient temperature is pretty high.
If it's not bothering you, best leave it until the fall.
I have to chain my system down.....it wants to hover..... |

NEVER use 3-in-1 oil !
Wd40 is best - just a quick shot, bot use the compressed air can first to blast away any dirt.
ALWAYS a good idea to put in an extra fan to keep the heat down - they are cheap enough.
Keep the air path as clear as possible - move the ribbon cables out of the way.
Remember that the new video cards also run hot. |
