I think the problem the critics had with the violence in Old Boy was that it was so realistic.
Not the cartoonish, over-the-top violence of Western movies like Die Hard and Rambo.
I for one didn't think Old Boy was that excessively violent. |

| i just saw old boy yesterday. i can't really add anything about the content that hasn't been said before, but i think this is one of the most powerful films i have ever seen. it has a truly dark heart and left me feeling like i had been hit by a truck, but i still want to see it again and again. fantastic! |

Yeah, it was just the octopus-eating scene, the claw hammer dentistry, and the entire fight scene shot on one take with no cuts. And yeah, that long shot fight scene was -- can I say poetic? |

I'm going to watch it tonight.
After reading this thread I hope all this anticipation I've built up for it doesn't let me down.
I'm sure it will be good. |

I downloaded the theme music for my ring tone. The 'Last Waltz' theme was what I really wanted, though. That is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard. They're even using it in a Neutrogena ad these days!
Buy the Way(tm), there have been ads on OCN for a movie called "3 Monster," which the ad says (in English) is directed by Park Chan-Wook. I've heard that Park only directed a third of the film, which is an anthology.

| I watched this, and it was a sweet flick, although it definitely made me feel like jumping out of my window immediately after watching it. Knowing that the director is the same guy who did Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance is awesome, though. That was also one hell of a movie. |

Old Boy rocks. I must have bought five copies of that DVD to give everyone else. But, arguably, there was a better candidate for a prize at Cannes this year... Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring... also Korean. Also worth seeing, also disturbing but not so violent.
SPOILERS---
The whole pregnancy thing... I think he means not that it was a psychologically caused faux pregnancy but that the rumours freed them to do something they hadn't yet done, causing a real pregnancy.
The deal with setting him up with his daughter is that he is saying "My sister and I knew and we still loved each other and did what we did. Now you know, do you still want to do like we did? Are you better (not sure better is the word I want) than us that you'll give up the love you've found because it's incestuous?" |

| Too morbid for me. The storyline is rather disturbing as everyone I'm sure will understand once they have seen the movie. |

| Forgot to mention. I saw the 3 Monster preview yesterday at the theater. It looks all Korean even if it's supposed to have those other two directors. You have four characters. A boy, the soldier who didn't die after raping the girl and was strung up on the beach and killed by the Team 3 leader in Silmido (who is obviously crazy in this movie, too), a pianist (tied and glued to the piano) and what's his name, the hottest Korean guy of all, star of everything from Bungee Jump to JSA. There was also a blender with water and fingers (from the pianist). Wow... looks like a sick film. |

Quite honestly (because I would never lie to you, sweetness) this is one of the most amazing films I have ever seen.
In my opinion, there aren't enough superlatives to describe how great it is.
I will say it now: Chan-wook Park is god.

PS - wow.
PPS - if you have seen it, don't give anything away to those who haven't. This movie deserves to be opened slowly, like a Christmas gift wrapped in flypaper and covered in pine tar. |
I second your opinion. A movie is simply a visual storytelling, and, oh my, it was the best Korean visual storytelling ever. Acting by everyone was superb and the director told the story in a way that you keep guessing till the end. The only thing I didn't like was the moral subject...., but all other aspects of the movie definitely made up for it. I definitely recommend it! |
