|
|
I'm interested to hear about people's experiences with folllowing a low carb diet in Korea. I'm returning there soon, and have since picked up the low carb habit.
I searched the archives and read the conversation that took place last fall on this topic. Anything new to add? How easy/difficult is it? What works? What should I stuff in my suitcase?
Thanks!

been doin Atkins since December. It's pretty easy.
The meat and veg here are cheap. If you eat out, eat galbi or at Outback. (Alice Spring's chicken without the sauce, side order of veggies...the best)you learn what you can and can't eat and just...do it.
all in all it's been pretty successful and relatively easy to follow.
Bring yourself some Splenda. It's the only thing I can think of ....Oh! And the ketosis strips if you are using them.
Other than that...it's all up to what you prefer to have... |

yeah, thanks helmut. I read that thread... It's got a lot of discussion on what's good or bad about low carb or meat vs. vegetables... <yawn>
I'm mostly interested to hear from people who are low carbing it, and having success. I'd like to hear about how they overcame the inevitable difficulties of doing something like Atkins in a foreign country. I can understand that such peeople would be reluctant to post though! Some people get very snarky over their carbs!
If you send me a private message, I'd appreciate that too!
cheers

Ok, I didn't read the link..I was looking for an old thread I started ('twas deleted) and saw the carb one...)
Well, I was successful in doing the induction phase of Atkins' program, and lost 20+ pounds, though I put in just over 3 weeks in this phase. Cranky was I, and wife hated it. OWL (ongoing weight loss) was a beetch, in that, in Korea I was subject to so many foods (a lifestyle) that just didn't groove with it.
Well, I'm dependant on beer
Strike One
Frequented restaurants with friends and family
Strike Two (Joe Kim's Rest. doesn't exactly cater to low-carb dieters)
I gave up.
Being Stateside is a different story, but since you pose the question of doing a low carb diet in Korea....
Well, I gave up beer (save a bottle or two of low carb <Aspen>) and now consume whiskey, water and ice.

Side note...I don't know everyone's location, so if you're still homeside, I suggest stocking up on Splenda, and any mix(es) you can get. If not, Mom! care package preeze!
Living in Seoul (unless you have a vehicle) will help you immensely, as the foreign markets will have (mostly) the ingredients you'll want/need/prefer for a low-carb diet (I mean, western style veggies and the like). Not to mention REAL meats and cheeses!
Any more questions, just PM me....

low carb diets are retarded. it blows my mind when intelligent people fall for fad diets. just eat a well balanced diet, low in fat and you'll be fine. |

Speaking as someone who was once almost 40 pounds overweight, who dieted successfully and has kept his weight under control for almost ten years, I agree with this sentiment.
Learn how your metabolism works. That is the key to successful dieting. That, and learning to say "no thank you," when a host offers you something, so much so that they start thinking you're an obsessive jerk.

Don't see Koreans on the Atkins and they seem to stay pretty thin. If you eat sensibly here, I don't see how you gain weight. |
