I think the problem the critics had with the violence in Old Boy was that it was so realistic.

Not the cartoonish, over-the-top violence of Western movies like Die Hard and Rambo.

I for one didn't think Old Boy was that excessively violent.

Yeah, it was just the octopus-eating scene, the claw hammer dentistry, and the entire fight scene shot on one take with no cuts. And yeah, that long shot fight scene was -- can I say poetic?

Yup. The best scene in the film... I wonder how and where they shot it..., how many takes it took and how much they practiced before shooting it. I tell ya, I was cheering for Daesu the whole time. Go get them! Smile

I picked it up for 19,000 won, and have watched it 4 times already. A worthy investment. It also has a lot of bonus stuff (in Korean only, unfortunately) and the OST.

BUYYYYY IIIIIIT!

I watched it again today. The soundtrack to this film really deserves a release.

Buy the Way(tm), anyone who can direct me to a copy of 'Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance' (³ǰ) with English subs gets my utmost praise and gratitude.

then I was discusted.. man thats japanese for you.. they have a lot of manga films with incest sex ,... and it just makes me sick...

if they would have made the ending the better.. I think it would of been a real good film. and had people leaving the movie saying.. WOW.. not..
OMG gross!!!
did it deserve the GRANDPRIX? well yeah guess so.. out of the competition I think this really was the better film.. I love the dark lighting, alot of rain style.. I want to see the future china movie.. 2048 or something like that..

Old boy was originally a comic book.

Quality film.

I heard that Hollywood are planning a remake with Brad Pitt and Jonny Depp in the two main roles.

I dunno, I like both actors but maybe Nicholas Cage or Edward Norton (maybe even Sean Penn) could do a better job in the Daesu role.

Confused either colin ferrell or johnny depp for dae-so's role and brad pitt or jude law for yu ji-tae's evil role.

Saw it last night in a DVD room...
Apparently the actor playing Daesoo ate 4 live octopuses during the takes.
Also if Hollywood are going to make a remake, how about Gary Oldman as the lead role? He even looks a bit like the guy who played him.

Great movie although the fight scenes were a bit ott. And yeh, the subtitles were crap again. Loads of times Mido clearly shouted 'Adjussi" and the subtitles read 'Daesoo".

If you watch with subtitles, you will find this sort of thing (older sister, older brother, adjussi etc.) are always (almost) changed to the names. This is not bad subtitling, but rather a cultural translation. How many western people (aside from us here in Korea) are going to understand a subtitle where a girl calls a guy she's romantically involved with "big brother"?

what you you suggest as a better translation? I only noticed one mistake with the subtitles, in the informercial about the sushi knives - "8 million wons!?" Minor stuff. Weren't they done by Darcy Parquet and Yeon Hyeon-Sook? They're pretty good.

I've seen it at Kyobo in Gangnam and also at Yongsan. Had no idea it was hard to find.

yeah, but the plot is very different. Park Chan-wook just took the set up (private prison, schooldays grudge, mandu tracking) and completely redid everything else. The protagonist in the Japanese Oldboy was imprisoned for only 10 years, and is only 35 when he is released. He messes around for ages, working at a construction site, meeting a couple of different women, hanging out at his friend's bar and spending time on the antagonist's yacht. No tooth pulling, no octopus, no deadlines, no daughter. Blame the sick stuff on the Koreans.
