Why?

well thats just my opinion...
I mean.. you telling me that you have found no better place in the world to grow old in. no better place which has better amenities for the old. better living conditions than for the old..
as foreigners I truely believe back home is better for retirement..
or a different country..
NOW that being said.. Im talking about foreigners,,.
for koreans its ok..
but for a foreigner 70 years old what you gonna do???
teach in the retirement home??

but having a wife here.. sure it might be ok. if this is your cup of tea for ever.. waste of a life means..
why spend yur whole life in once place???
wasted!! travel around..see the world.. experience other cultures..
thats my opinion.. others may just want to stay in korea for 50 years and not live else where.. good for you..
not this guy!!!

I've been here four years, and have never been to Busan, Daegu, Jeju, etc.

Sad, non?

done 2. Will do one more, and that will be IT. A relocation to japan, then maybe the Phillipines or somewhere new altogether.

With this many ppl who are 3-4+ yrs here, I think it shows that it's not all bad. More good than bad, if it keeps people sowing permanent roots here. Just imagine how many lifers who don't post here. Personally, I think I'm done after this contract. Got a lot of other countries I want to see and try living in for a spell.

Nope.

Busan is smaller version of dirty old Seoul with less to do and people who speak Korean as if they're always angry.

Daegu doesn't have much going for it except apples.

Jeju is just a large volcanic rock with a lot of wind.

And hot chicks. I love Daegu women. Except the conservative nature that many have. Good tight nightlife. And the culture runs thick there. I had a great enriching Korean experience living there.

As an esler, I think its useful to teach in one country for 3 years before moving on. It becomes a stable home base for you, you get to understand the culture properly, save cash, form a social circle, establish yourself on the ladder, etc. Teaching in a new country every year would wear me out.

Eazy_E, it will be interesting to see what happens to you after you're "home" for a time. You MAY find yourself missing things that used to drive you crazy! Don't forget to stand WAAAAYYYY back from people in line at Micky D's! Laughing

At least in a line-up in Canada if some old woman cuts in front of me I can say something instead of worrying about the Confucian hierarchy!

By the time I am 70, I will have long since retired, and not need to teach or work. Besides staying in Korea does not mean staying here every day. Finish your contract and then take two months off and "experience other cultures"

I am curious. Do you mean the managers of a big corporation or company back in Canada or the States who rake down big bucks and have a very comfortable lifestyle are wasting their life because they are staying in one place?

"Waste of a life" does not mean staying in one place. It means NOT doing what you want to be doing. That is what I would say. Don't you think that is a slightly better definition. After all, if you are doing what you like best, how is that a waste of a life, regardless whether you stay in one place or not?

It will be interesting to see how many of the people who claim that this is their last year keep their word. I'll bet that 95% will be back here, before a year is over, regardless of what they say.
