Personally, if I wanted to spend time with Westerners, I would live in New York.

The funny thing is.. the ones who dont want to hang out with any westerners are probably the ones who had no friends back in their country thus bitter about their own race. As for being a proud Canadian, I definately dont want to be mistaken for a damn American.

nice helpful repsonses on this thread then...

Well at first I hadn't heard of Dangsan, but a quick look at the subway map and it turns out you're two stops away from Hongik Uni, (Hongdae, popular bar and club area), and three away from Sinchon (good for shopping, always full of white faces). Don't fret you're in a good location.

If you go out drinking at the weekend I'm sure you'll end up bumping into some waegooks at either of those areas (try US66 in Hongdae or Doors bar in Sinchon), but it's probably better to try and arrange to meet someone who seems friendly on this (or another) message board at first.
Otherwise you'll end up getting smashed on vodka, walking up to randoms and saying "Hey let's be best friends", which is creepy in any country.

Thank god someone finally gave some helpful advice. I agreee with swissjames, meeting people from the board is probably not a bad way to start. Not to say everyone on the board is nice in person, but many are.

This board has some ladies lunches occasionally, I think there is one coming up soonish. There you will meet some genuinely great girls, who will make you feel right at home I'm sure.

Yeah, come to the ladies lunch. I think it'll be towards the end of august, and you'll meet a ton of women who're all pretty cool.

I've lived in my city(Masan) for 4 months and have seen 2 other foreigners on the street in that time.
In Changwon i used to see a lot more but here it seems every one is addicted to taxis Very Happy

However, they are there somewhere as when I go to the foreigner hangouts they do come out of the woodwork.

Okay, so thanks for the advice, and the entertainment the Canada vs. America stuff provided. So, I shall attend the ladies lunch, and go out with some friends coming up from Daegu, to meet people who live here. I don't mind the Koreans, it's just if I say something that is damn funny, which is often, and they just stare at me, I can't help but to feel a lack of connection. Today, a teacher at my school started clapping when I wrote my name in Korean, she then took the notebook around to show the other teachers. They then gave me several thumbs up. Then I walked over, thinking of course I was so funny, and pointed to the place on the her notebook where the Korean teacher had written her name in English, and said, "OOOHHHH, Very good." She didn't get my point, didn't get I was kidding since she had just been so condescending with me, and simply looked confused and offered me a pack of vitamen C powder.
