I've been reading alot of posts and get the impression that Korea is a big drinking country. It's strange though, I never figured Koreans to be big-time boozers. So, is it true?

What would you consider Korea in terms of boozing/partying on a scale of 1-10 (assuming Irish are 10 and Amish are 1)?

I've pretty much made up my mind on coming to Korea already but knowing this just gets me more excited!

Thx. Wink

Drinking is a huge part of Korean culture, especially for men, but it's not so much a party place. I'd give it around a 7

I think there is an effort to curb this, but the drinking culture revolves around macho binge drinking: drinking until you puke to show up the other males that are with you.

When I lived in Germany, many of my friends were Irish, British, and, of course, German. And even though their societies had heavy drinkers, it was they who taught me the value of drinking to enhance social get-togethers and knowing your limit, not drinking to "get trashed."

I disagree that Koreans aren't a party type of people. When I'm inside the "party circle" at hofs with Koreans, I'm having a damn good time. You just have to be inside the circle.

Am I totally off on this observation, folks?

Strange for such a hard drinking country what lightweights some of them can be (not that I'm much better). I've seen plenty of Koreans get plastered after just one bottle of soju.

Heard it several times now that Koreans drink more per capita than any other country in the world. Anyone else heard this, too?

That could be because they count soju as liquor the same as vodka etc. despite being much weaker, giving koreans a big edge.

I would give them a 9 for how much they drink, and a 2 for how well they handle their liquor.
