I've planning to return to Korea soon and have been applying for jobs. I was contacted about a job a week and a half ago, which provided reasonable pay, good hours and reasonable holidays. The school caters for elementary and middle school students, a teacher working there said that the conditions and school are very good. I hadn't heard back from that school for over a week so I was starting to think they must have found someone else, until they contacted me again today.

In the meantime, I was contacted by a school which offered better pay (100,000�� more per month), decent hours - although they have a split shift, but quite miserly holidays. The school caters for adults, a teacher working there also said that the school and conditions are good.

Both schools have expressed that they're interested in hiring me and both schools sound quite good in my opinion.

At this stage, I'm probably siding with the school, which teaches children since although it doesn't pay as much and I wouldn't mind teaching adults, they provide longer holidays and it doesn't involve split shifts, which I've heard are pretty tough.

I was just wondering, given the choice, would you take a school providing less pay but more holidays over a school providing more pay but less holidays, or vice versa?

You haven't reall yprovided details but if the reduction of pay was only 100 000 a month but you get a 10 days more holiday I would go that route.

Money isn't everything and in this country you sure need some down time just to chill

The first school offers the standard 10 days though the second school only offers 4!

(Both schools include Korean public hols. & no weekends. Both schools pay for a standard 6 hours work per day yet usually only have 5 classes per day.)

My contract for mt first year in Korea was just 5 days, which was short but I managed, though I'm not too keen on having even less holidays!

It's frustrating living in a foreign country and having not enough time to study the language.
If schoolteachers in Anglophonia can have three months a year, why can't we have even one?

Because the majority of us are not school teachers. I'm betting it is the same situation for ESL teachers in your home country, they definantly don't get 3 months off.

I'd go for the longer holiays. I've worked both split and regualr shifts, and I noticed that when I work split shifts I spend way more money on things like fast food cause I'm either too pressed for time, or too tired to cook.

Unless you're only here for the money, planning to stay home and eat ramyeon and save every single shipwon coin you can, go for the other job. Chances are the quality of life overall will be well worth the slight pay difference.

Thanks everyone for your responses. The more I think of it, the more I'm preferring the school with the longer holidays and regular shift.

Money isn't all that important to me, especially when there's not a huge difference in the pay anyway. Another bonus is that the first school's position is set to commence earlier, I'm sick of being bored, unemployed and looking for work here in Australia! Very Happy

Besides Korean law requires a minimum of 10 days off per year and I believe it has just recently been upped to 15 days.


16. VACATION: One day per month + 10 days per year or 22 days (+ 12 days for females or 32 per year) Art. 47 ~ 48 Statutory holidays are additional.

I stand corrected 22 days per year

i tried arguing that point with my former asswipe boss, but he said it wasn't true anymore. grotto, have you spoken with thelabour board directly?
