If most people could be making more back home...they would be back home!
Let's face it...most people are in korea because they can't get a decent job in their home country! Nothing wrong with the truth. Sure, koreans ard korea are not everyones cup of tea...but, if it's not, the flight goes both ways!
So...you got to put up with the BS!

Nope. I could be making more back home. I'm here because I'd have to work a lot harder and a lot more back home to make more.

Yeah, but comparatively speaking, you are probably making more here in Korea than at home. Compare the hours/pay ratio of your current job with the market back home. I'm in Korea because the money is sooooooo easy to make and the accommodation is free. That is the truth. The jobs back home are stress-inducing, spirit-breaking with pittance "salaries". No thanks. I'll continue to enjoy my life here rather than supposedly going back to reality. Yeah, Korea ticks me off occasionally but it is far better than the alternative.

If you take cost of living into consideration and factor in all the benefits like housing, no way are ESL teachers in Korea underpaid.

I came here with no experience and am making 2.0mil a month plus housing. Now I could probably get more at home, but cost of living is way higher, and if we're talking about teaching ESL here...before settling on Korea I looked at teaching in Europe. Now there's a saturated ESL teaching market for you. The pay is awful, and there are often no benefits. You don't get housing or insurance. When Korea gets like that, that's when whining and complaining about wages will be justified. But hopefully that won't be for 10 or more years.

ESL teachers in Asia--especially Korea and China--might not be making the money they made back in 1996, but we're still getting way more than Korean teachers make, and we shouldn't ignore that either.

Yes, we should ignore that. What our Korean counterparts make has no bearing on we are underpaid.

Interestingly enough, at my hogwon many Korean teachers are actually making more than I do because they get paid a percentage of their students' tuition. The best teachers are given classrooms that can hold 60 or more students for listening and TOEIC/TOEFL courses, and can make between 5 and 10 million per month. They work hard for this, but they do very well for themselves.

At the typical kiddie hogwon, however, Korean teachers suck it up with crap pay because they don't have other options, and most of them are living with their parents or husbands to soften the sting of crap pay.

In short, our situations are different. The questions that matter most to me are the following:

Is my job providing me with a standard of living that is acceptable to me?

Is my job better than other options that are available to me right now?

For the moment, the answers to both are still yes for me.

Are they for you? That's all that really matters here.

This is one of the biggest, totally unjustified and ignorant comments I have read on this board.

Example.

My salary in England: about 25,000 pounds. Had to pay 25% tax on that.
Plus. Fully expensed and fuelled company Subaru Impreza Turbo.
Plus. 70 days, paid vacation a year.
Plus. Working any hours I chose to provided I hit my target. Average day? 9am through 2pm.
Ok. I had to pay my rent. 250 pounds a month plus other stuff:usual bills etc.

My salary in Korea? About 3.6 million in Korea. That equates to a similar salary. Take home admitedly. No car. 10 days unpaid holidays a year. 1/2 my housing. Teaching 37 hours a week.

My being here has nothing to do with my not being able to get a job.

You are spouting of your arse with that. Sorry.

Lush says:'The title of the this thread is "Salaries are too low in Korea." I was commenting that yes, englishee teacher jobs do pay a insanely low salary."

You are wrong. Native English speakers with no experience teaching get paid more here in Korea than in any other country in the world.

Lush says: "Not everyone here works in the corrupt esl game/scam/racket (in any position) at all."

No kidding? Laughing But this website, this board and particularly this thread are about English teachers in Korea. You aren't that? Then why? What are you doing here trashing all the English teachers for their wages and lifestyle?

Lush says:"Can you clarify what you were attempting to imply with this gem?
Quote:
Managers, recruiters, whatever always soiling the threads in lame attempts to get the rest of us working less for more hours.
"

I'm taking a stab at guessing why you would take the time to register and post on a website for ESL teachers when you say you aren't one. Why are you on this board at all? Just trolling perhaps?

Lush says: "Quote:
We're talking about what teachers get paid and how that compares to home
Lush:
Are you a real teacher at home? How many hogwon singers are real teachers at home? No, we are talking about people accepting jobs that pay (on average) less the 2,000 USD per month. WooooHooo! Couldnt you just live in moms basement, pay no rent, food, or utilities, drive moms and dads car and do the same or better at home surrounded by a culture you at least understand and are a part of?
"

If you were a teacher here you wouldn't need to ask any of these questions. Native English speakers don't need teaching qualifications to teach here. To accurately compare two countries salaries you need to take into account taxes, cost of living and benefits such as health care. $US 2000 a month as a salary is less than what teachers are paid here when you take those things into account. Free accommodation compared to your option of living at home is such a benefit. It would be more accurate to compare a starting teachers wage from the US to a Korean wage here. This is clearly another lame attempt at trashing ex-pat teachers.

Lush says: "One more question, and dont worry if the answer is "yes" I wont be hurt, but are you referring to me with this quip?
Quote:
the ass who talks teacher but claims to make 4-6 mil in bonuses. what a goof.
"

Yes I am. For many reasons. You are not a teacher. Your numbers are clearly wrong. You are obviously trolling.

You are an ass because you are on an ESL teacher's website, an ESL teacher's board, taking part in a debate about what ESL teachers think about their jobs, salaries and job offers but you are not an ESL teacher. I believe that suits any dictionary definition of an ass.

You did not qualify your posts by telling the readers you aren't a teacher here. You try to insult the wages and lifestyle of ex-pat ESl teachers. A lifestyle that you don't live. That suggests you are trolling.

What you dont know makes you a dumbass-even Zyzyfer says so!

I have said multiple times that I am not a hogwon singer dalton- additionally this board is also about expat life here in korea you dumbass. I am sorry sister, but i made more the the average hogwon singers total yearly pay (24 million won) Plus their bonus (2 million won) Plus any airfair (2 million just for arguements sake) IN BONUSES ALONE THIS PAST YEAR
Put that in your pipe and smoke it little sis!

I think its sort of funny - the people that know what a joke hogwon work is usually yell the loudest about what a nobile profession it is. Dalton you are one of the most vocal hogwon psychos here! GOOD JOB!!

Who's Zyzyfer?
All I know is you spend a lot of time trashing ex-pat teachers here.
You aren't a teacher and yet you're posting on the job-related discussion forum.

Look up at the line below "Korean Job Discussion Forums".
It says "The Internet's Meeting Place for ESL/EFL Teachers from Around the World!" I don't see any mention of non-teachers who like trashing teachers, their jobs or their lifestyles. Maybe that's an idea for a new forum. Until then you're still a dictionary definition ass.

Now you know that's not true, a pathetic attempt at self aggrandizement and laughable, but clearly not true.

If it were you would not be on this site reacting so quickly and aggresively. You maybe make 2.0 mil./month, clean the classrooms as well, and come back to your room and play cyber mogul. Why would someone who moves in your supposed circles be right in on this thread? Don'y your mover and shaker friends invite you out? I mean if it wasn't for you, how would they get their mail? Very Happy

Care to enlighten us why you are here? And the poster you quoted said "most people" not "all people" yet you and you alone chose to respond to that. Hmmm... I agree with Mr. hellofaniceguy. If this did not apply to you, why be so defensive? He clearly did not include all ESL teachers here in his statement, couldn't you just assume that you were in the minority?

This argument just circles back to why are people here teaching English?
Some strive to claim that they are all losers who can't get work back home.
Others say that they like teaching and Korea pays the most.

There are no stats. If someone says they are here because they want to be and like it then who can argue with that? No matter where this recurring debate goes it always has the look and feel of a flame aimed at ex-pats who work in Korea as English teachers.

Everybody knows somebody who fits this or that mold but nobody knows everybody and there are no stats.

Just a load of crap endlessly challenging everyone why they're here and ignoring their responses.

My last bonus was a little over 10 mil- and so was everyone in my pay group.

but whatever- you know what - i dont give a crap what you think. I laugh at people like you on a daily basis....
