Please find the quote in this thread where anybody said that ALL English teachers here are "losers who can't get work back home."
Thank you. |

I am speaking about this type of debate in a general, historical context.
I'll use the quote function or let people know when I'm quoting someone specifically. Until then you can understand that 'some' refers to posters on this board over the time I've posted here. Not necessarily posters in this thread. If that's not clear from my post then I have corrected it now.
If nobody says 'all teachers in Korea are losers who can't get a job back home' ever again I'll be happy.

There are no stats. If someone says they are here because they want to be and like it then who can argue with that? No matter where this recurring debate goes it always has the look and feel of a flame aimed at ex-pats who work in Korea as English teachers.
Everybody knows somebody who fits this or that mold but nobody knows everybody and there are no stats.
Just a load of crap endlessly challenging everyone why they're here and ignoring their responses.[/quote] |

Sorry to post twice in a row but here's an example of someone being challenged about their career path despite giving a rather detailed reason for it.

Let's face it...most people are in korea because they can't get a decent job in their home country!
So...you got to put up with the BS! |
This is one of the biggest, totally unjustified and ignorant comments I have read on this board.
Example.
My salary in England: about 25,000 pounds. Had to pay 25% tax on that.
Plus. Fully expensed and fuelled company Subaru Impreza Turbo.
Plus. 70 days, paid vacation a year.
Plus. Working any hours I chose to provided I hit my target. Average day? 9am through 2pm.
Ok. I had to pay my rent. 250 pounds a month plus other stuff:usual bills etc.
My salary in Korea? About 3.6 million in Korea. That equates to a similar salary. Take home admitedly. No car. 10 days unpaid holidays a year. 1/2 my housing. Teaching 37 hours a week.
My being here has nothing to do with my not being able to get a job.
You are spouting of your arse with that. Sorry. |
Care to enlighten us why you are here? And the poster you quoted said "most people" not "all people" yet you and you alone chose to respond to that. Hmmm... I agree with Mr. hellofaniceguy. If this did not apply to you, why be so defensive? He clearly did not include all ESL teachers here in his statement, couldn't you just assume that you were in the minority? |
Who are you that anyone has to enlighten you as to why they came to Korea? 'Most' people might as well be all people. Silly semantics argument.
I say most people who criticize teachers pay here are pathetic bullies compensating for something they lack in life. |

No one is "challenging" anyone. Merely asking a question. Why are you being so defensive? And 'most" people do not equate to "all" people. Read a dictionary.
I never said that I was someone that people had to enlighten me. I asked if the poster would care to share his reasons. If so, fine, if not, fine. |

I like the thesaurus myself:
Entry: most
Function: adverb
Definition: extremely
Synonyms: about, all but, almost, approximately, close, eminently, exceedingly, mightily, much, nearly, nearly all, nigh, practically, remarkably, super, surpassingly, too, very, well-nigh
Entry: ask
Function: verb
Definition: question
Synonyms: buzz, canvass, catechize, Challenge, cross-examine, demand, direct, enjoin, examine, go over, grill, hit, hunt for, inquire, interrogate, investigate, needle, pry into, pump, query, quiz, request, roast, strike, sweat
Any questions? |

I don't see where most=all
As for the second I'll give you the dictionary definition, but the question was not meant to be asked in a challenging tone. That's one of the limits of this message board, body language and tone of voice are so important in determining one's intent. |

Exactly. So when someone says 'most' we don't have the visual and verbal cues that say "hey I don't mean you buddy!" We have to rely on the tone of the message. In that regard I don't believe anybody can truthfully say anything about most ex-pats here except the obvious. Why people are here does not have any obvious answer except - to teach English or do whatever other job they are doing.
This seems pretty common sense to me. So when a poster says most ex-pats can't get a decent job at home, as someone said in this thread, one has to wonder if the poster is incapable of seeing the obvious error of such a statement, the poster had a mind burp or was otherwise mentally incapacitated, the poster is just being rude to ex-pats in Korea.
Whether they used all or most is just a silly argumentative point.
Similarily when a poster states why they came to Korea in detailed fashion and they are asked the same question again, just re-phrased, it has the look of someone being cross-examined. There are no visual or verbal clues that say 'sorry, what's that? I didn't hear you the first time'. |

Huh? Are we talking about the same poster? The poster I asked the question of did not state WHY he came to Korea, only that he came. He gave no reasons for his career shift. Not that he has to, I merely asked the question because I was curious. It sounded like he had a good job back home and left it to come to a place where cheating on wages, benefits and vacations are common. |

Yeah it's kind of obvious* that the poster just likes it here in Korea eh? The poster sure didn't come here because they couldn't get a good job back home. Which brings us back to:

Maybe you'd like to let the poster respond for him/herself? Thank you. |

Why. Is it not to your liking that someone might enjoy working here?
I do. Ask me why.

Here's a link for you from the FAQ.
How to Break a Contract
But 1.9 isn't unusually low here. Perhaps you should start a new topic for info. Your hours may be the real problem. |

So do I. In fact I intend to work here for some years to come.
I simply asked why Toby does. Interesting that you keep responding. I'd be careful. Some people might think "sock" (of course I am not one of them )
I'll bite. WHY do YOU enjoy working here? |
