but whatever- you know what - i dont give a crap what you think. I laugh at people like you on a daily basis....
Yes you do and no you don't. You clearly need qualification from this board to feel good about yourself. If all your claims were true you wouldn't even be involved in this thread. Pm if you need a loan to get home to Ma's basement. I like to help others, it's good Karma. |

Yes Toby but when you look longer term when I got here in 1997 the avg wage for a non-experienced teacher was 1.1.
A mere 5 years later (2002) it was up to 1.9-2.0 which is a decent increase in wage for that time span.
Also to consider is that the market is linked to the health of the economy (I know an obvious statement).
As far as required qualifications getting stricter that is fine and it is a normal evolution of the teaching market.
Still a first job at 2.0 for a non-experienced teacher with a degree in Botany is pretty good if you look beyond the raw salary.
First, they pay your airfare.
Second, you have no rent to pay.
Third, you saving potential compared to a job with similar pay back home does not compare. No contest as here you can save heaps more.
So, job that allows you to save a good grand a month and that requires no previous experience beyond a B.A. is damn good Toby.
If you are experienced (have taught before) then it is a different ball game.
Personally I am glad the requirements for jobs are becoming stricter, it will only improve the overall quality of teaching. |
in 1997 the salary at just about everywhere was 1,4 million . 1.1 was the average in mid 1995. |

We have 3 foreign teachers at our school and we all go 8 classes in a row without breaks so we are worn out everyday. To placate us the school promised to get another foreign teacher so that the occasional break would be possible. However, when it was brought up this week they are now saying they checked with immigration and they are not allowed to hire anymore foreign teachers now as we have 3 teachers and about hundred students so they have reached their allowable waygook quota.
Does anyone know if this is true, or if it just a convenient and slightly plausible lie?
Thanks. |
That sound you hear is me laughing. when you are singing the "hello" song today, did you think of Thailand? |

I've met teachers who love the hello song. Your assumption that people hate their jobs and envy yours just confirms that you are a dictionary definition ass.

This argument just circles back to why are people here teaching English?
Some strive to claim that they are all losers who can't get work back home.
Others say that they like teaching and Korea pays the most.
There are no stats. If someone says they are here because they want to be and like it then who can argue with that? No matter where this recurring debate goes it always has the look and feel of a flame aimed at ex-pats who work in Korea as English teachers.
Everybody knows somebody who fits this or that mold but nobody knows everybody and there are no stats.
Just a load of crap endlessly challenging everyone why they're here and ignoring their responses. |

How is it someone who moves in the top echelons of Korean society is familiar with a song I am not? Of course we all really know it's because you are also a hakwon teacher. Now, I don't have any students under 10 so we just say hello rather than sing it, but who knows? that may be a fun way for you to start the day, to each his own.
Lush 72, I cannot return your anger as I can see it is borne out of insecurity rather than malicious intent. So you want to be more than a hakwon teacher, well then keep plugging away. But why the concern with other's levels of contentment? That is a classic preoccupation of those with low self-esteem and until you stop trying to make your life seem better by misrepresenting your position and putting others down you will always be the unhappy person you clearly are at present. Break the cycle man! |
