In my experience taxi drivers that do this are very uncommon in Korea. I use taxis every weekend, and despite the long distance from downtown to my residential area the taxi drivers nearly always take exactly the same route. I think that if you request your destination in decent Korean (as another Korean would do ie. .........ּ) then the taxi driver probably feels that you know your way around.

No, they don't. I always request in Korean. Additionally, I responded to the taxi driver's horrible English in Korean.

The other times they took longer routes, I had had conversations with the drivers in Korean.

I think just paying the normal amount is the best bet, but at the time I only had 10,000 won bills. Maybe I'll "verify" the standard fee before I get in next time.

Out of 50 taxi rides I only get stung once. I guess you are less fortunate.

I think in 2.5 years(about 500 taxi rides I would think), i have only had one problem with fares.

I just got my pen and paper and jotted down his number.

Couldn't get me out of his taxi quick enough.
