There is a train that runs to Yeosu, but it doesn't leave from Seoul station anymore. I think it leaves from Yongsan, if I'm remembering correctly. If you check the Korail page you'll be able to find out for certain. The train takes about 6 hours.

unfortunately their korail site isnt working. i checked with a koraen person earlier today about that train to yeosu and he said it isnt direct and in fact is quite slow. he said it stops at iksan and then you have to transfer trains and it ends up taking a long time. i guess thats the 6 hours you're referring to. im just trying to find a more direct route than the ktx to kwangju + bus to yeosu im currently planning on doing.

That Korail site is ALWAYS down!! Try this one: http://english.barota.com/. You don't have to have a membership (although it sure is worth the 20,000!), to inquire about dates/seats. PS: Check the "transfer" circle so you can get all of the routes...and yes, it leaves from Youngsan.

you need to leave from Yeongdeungpo...

if you leave from seoul station you'll need to change at iksan.

the ktx only goes to gwangju.. if ya wanna take the ktx you'll need to change at gwangju and most of the trains that run on the yeosu line actually leave from east gwangju or songjongri stations..

not many hook up at gwangju station..

there is a direct train and it only leaves from Yeongdeungpo.. get the express, it costs 8,000 more i think but you can do the run in about 6 hours.. the mugunghwa must take at least 7 hours...

it's 5 hours to suncheon from seoul on the express and yeosu is 50 minutes further on

There's also a regular bus service to Yeosu from Seoul that's usually faster than the train. (If you were travelling during, say, Chusok, it would be slower. Laughing )

When I took my trip to Geomundo, we took a train from Suwon to Yeosu. We started at 11:30 or so, and arrived at 4:30. No transfers.

But the real kicker is that we took a sleeping car. If you really want to save time by starting your trip a night early and do most of the travelling while you're asleep, it's the way to go. Sure, it's more expensive, but the sleeper car compartments are quite nice.

Only real problem is that we arrived at like 4:30 in the morning, and had to fart around at the ferry terminal for a couple of hours.
