even when it goes to the police, the cops will try and settle it this way first... less hassles and paper work for them. They wont get involved in the negotiations, but will finalise everything.... prices range on the seroiusness of injuries, which is determened by going to a hospital and they will give you an appropriate document as to how long your injuries require you to be hospitalised... anything over 4 weeks means you can be up on serious assault charges.... but most hospitals are shady and give four weeks out live candy.

So, if some ajosshi assaults you on the subway, you have to restrain him and lead him to the nearest police station- don't worry, he'll agree to this easily..
And you can rely on all bystanders to get involved helping you out, and getting his ID, adress and phone number.
or if you call the police and manage to explain the whole situation in your fluent Korean, you can rely on them arriving promptly, in time, to apprehend the offender before he dashes off the platform.
While he's punching you, concentrate on going for his wallet so you can write down his phone number and details.
