Actually, I'm at a school that operates according to the model I posted and that has operated according to this model for a number of years. Hence, I know that it IS possible for quality schools to succeed in Korea, despite what some skinflint owners may want their teachers to believe. The, er, contrasting references were drawn from prior experience at a now-defunct hagwon.

What do you mean by qualifed teachers? There would be a lot of people out of jobs here in Korea, if you mean what I think you mean. |

My first school used the standard 'scortched earth' template that is so popular. Currently it's gone from 6 teachers down to 2.5 in the last 18 months.
The school I'm at now is run by an American and his Korean wife. As far as I can tell, the business plan centers around viral marketing, long term student retention and some income diversification. I'm lazy, so here's point form.
- Parent's get referal discounts.
- I've got kids who've been coming here 5 years. We try to keep them happy as a first priority.
- The boss has opened a recording studio to do voice work for commercials ect.
It seems to work pretty well. There's about 300 students, and last year at the Kyunggido english contest, three of our kids came first in their class. |
