I have a region 1 dvd in my toshiba satellite 1800 notebook. Most of the time it works just fine. But I have 2 sets of region 1 dvds that have a couple of shows on one or two of the disks in the set that won't play at all. I use the video program that came with the first box set (I am not at home and can't remember the name of it right now) to watch the programs.

I have tried the disks on a friend's computer and they play just fine. I am assuming there is something wrong with my dvd player and I am wondering if there is a way to fix it or if I have to replace it.

Any ideas?

If it's a region coding problem, you can try downloading DVD Genie from www.downloads.com (if it's still on there). that will remove the region coding or allow you to change it.

Actually it isn't a coding problem. Although I will check that out so I can use KOrean dvds in my dvd player.

I have a region 1 dvd player and these are region 1 dvds. It is just that 2 of the episodes won't play on my machine. I checked and I use PCfriendly dvd player which came with the first dvd in the set.

Any other ideas?

I can provide no ideas other than I share you pain. I had a laptop (HP/Compaq... I beg of you readers... never buy an HP/Compaq laptop) with a region 1 DVD player. For some reason it just stopped playing some region 1 DVDs, DVDs that ran perfectly fine before. The DVD drive wouldn't even recognize there was a DVD in the drive. Other DVDs it worked fine. Grrr.

Reinstall everything would be my only solution.

Try it in different players- videolan for example, thencheck to see if you can get updated drivers for the DVD player.

Before you set your DVD player to Region Free, check out this link below to a related thread. Firmware isn't for everyone so try to find another solution before permanently setting your DVD player to Region Free.

Thanks for all your comments. I really appreciate them.

I had friends coming to visit me in August so I asked them to buy a Canadian dvd player and bring it over here and it plays all the dvds just fine. Doesn't fix the problem in the computer dvd player but eliminates the need for it.

Why don't you use your Canadian, region 1, DVD player for North American DVD's and use your computer for Korean DVD's? Your computer will change the region codes but most players have 4-5 possible region code changes before it becomes permanent, at which time, you can apply the firmware patch to make your player region free if you want.

This is what I would do anyways!
