I'm alright. I spent a season in the canadian rockies. i prefer big long turns to half pipe and stuff like that. Have you been to yong pyong much? what's it like? do you have your own gear? the thing for me that I would have to rent/borrow everything from a board to pants/gloves/goggles.... |

Sweeeeeet.
I learned to ride there. Snowy days are delish. Shitty days ain't: one concussion, two broken ribs, and no ganja.
How much is a season pass? I tried to get the job I wanted in Gangneung, to no avail. So I'll be out on the west coast, probably closer to Muju. Anyone been there?
I'm bringing all my own gear, though. My gear bag's big enough to hold more than just gear, so it's my second suitcase. Besides, I hope to spend at least ten days touring Japan. |

You should try and find a club, I lived in Gyeongsangbuk, near sajo ski resort and there was a club called boardingsarang, and they offered discounts for season tickets and always had people driving to the moutain.
Ask at some snowboardin shops. |

I ride too. I learned to ride in Colorado, so am very partial to riding powder than man-made like in So Cal. One cool thing about riding in So Cal was that you could ride with a t-shirt on, but would much rather ride in powder. Anyways, I left all my gear in So Cal in a storage, along with my scuba gear, but have been contempleting whether or not if I should just rent the gear if it's cheap or have my stuff sent over. Thinking about possible hassles of having my gear sent over, and taking it with me when I leave here next year is really making me lean towards renting. Anyone know how much it costs to rent, and to get a day pass near Seoul? I was told that there are a couple of places to go near Seoul, but can't think of their names. If you guys are near Seoul, we definitely need to ride together this winter. Everyone sounds like they are around my level. |

Then you're SOL. There's virtually no powder in Korea, except way up north near the border, and up there the slopes are so weak it's not worth bothering.
Yongpyeong is getting worse each year. I skied there in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2004. Each time there were more people (inexperienced skiers on the "expert" slopes muck up the whole scene), there was less snow (the last great snow was way back in 2001), and it's getting darn near impossible to find accomodations (and day trips are simply a killer on the body). In the end, boarding/skiing in Korea is more frustrating than anything else, moreso if you truly love the sport. If you really love the sport, drop some dough and head to Japan, where the skiing is fantabulous. Or better yet, catch a relatively cheap flight to Vancouver and conquer Whistler/Blackcomb, the best resort in the world, bar none. |

For a relative beginner where would be the best place to buy gear in Korea (used is okay) and what is the nearest resort to central Seoul (the quality of the hill isn't so important as I'm still spending most of my time wiping out)? |

Bear's Town is the best resort close to Seoul, in terms of slopes. It's nothing special at all, mind you. Nothing near Seoul is special, for that matter. Since you're a beginner, don't buy anything. Rent. You may only hit the slopes once or twice a year anyway. The gear you'll rent ranges from mediocre to "found it on the slag heap". You can lay down bucks for better rental gear, but on Korean slopes it won't make much of a difference. On ice, skis are skis/boards are boards. |

Sounds a lot like So Cal. Crap load of people who can't ski or board, getting in your way, or just sitting on the slopes. I try to not get too frustrated since I remember plenty of times when I would eat it, and had to take a breather sitting on my butt, or just being really clumsy on the slopes. Of course the whole frustration with people wouldn't exist if the mountains were little bit bigger, but I will do with what I have. I have gotten pretty damn good at weaving in, and out of the crowd cruzing down the slopes in So Cal, so hopefully, it's not any worse here.
If I can save some dough, I might check out Japan. That sounds really cool. Have you checked out any resorts in Colorado? I am not sure if Vancouver is anything like Mt. Hood in Portland, OR, but have a couple of friends who used to ride at Hood. One of them actually moved back to Colorado to be a dedicated ski bum for a year, and got pretty damn good. |
