Hello,
I'm currently considering ditching my Brighton based web development career and moving out to Korea to teach. Am I like to be hindered by my age at 33? Or is it common for people of such antiquity to come out and start working there?
Any help from anyone would be gratefully received.
Cheers,
Tim. |

It's different, most people who come to work here are in their 20's. I'm in my 30's though, and have met people here who are also in their 30's. If you really want to come to Korea, get away from whatever, go for it!! 33 is hardly old!! |

You'd recommend it then (judging by your username)?

Tim Rose ,
I was 36 when I first came over and it hasn't made any difference to my employability ( Degree + Alive & Breathing = Job ). In fact , I think the kids and parents look up to you a bit more .
It certainly doesn't stop you from being Dong shimmed !!
Go for it and enjoy .

I'm 42 in 2 more days, and at 41 I got my first job here after posting my resume on Dave's. I didn't even apply to any jobs, I had 40 responses to my post in 6 hours of posting it and just sort of picked the one I thought was best (and I really lucked out -- this is a great job!).
I know people here now who are much older than me and have been here a long time -- love it here and keep getting new contracts year after year. I met one guy in his 50's who takes a year here, goes home for a month, applies to another job, comes here a year, etc...been doing that for 8 years now.
So, COME ON OVER and live the good life |

36 here....your age is of no importance. Korea is equally brutal...it makes no special age distinction.
I'm just kidding. I have a great life here. |

I guess that, on average, older people will generally have an easier go of it here than those in their twenties. Korea is not for everyone, although I think that some people will never be comfortable wherever they go. Older people have seen more, and will generally have a better rounded view of the world around them. Tim Rose, get your arse over here!! |

Yeah..as everyone has said 33 years old should be no problem.
Its more about your persoanlity and tolerance than your age once you get here. |

Hi !
I'm in my mid 30's myself. Don't let the age thing bother you. What I would worryabout is your patience and tolerance level! Korea, in general, is not foreigner friendly. You will be frustrated by the language barrier, the noise pollution, the crowded buses, highways and subways, the demonstrations, the rudeness of most Koreans, and the general disrespect students have of their foreign teachers. If you have little tolerance Korea WILL make you crazy!
Of course there are exceptions to all of these obstacles...but this will take time to experience. You will make some Korean friends here but a lot of it depends on how patient you are with their country and it's obvious shortcomings. They often refuse to acknowledge their shortcomings as a country and hate to hear even the slightest of criticisms. Koreans can become your best friends or your worst enemies. Save your criticisms for your foreign friends at the local bar/club. We all have stories and advice to pass on. Be patient, good things come to people who wait!
Best of luck in your endeavor. |
