This must be one of the most stupidist things a (Canadian) foreign teacher has probably done is Seoul.....

A Canadian living in Seoul recently caused a commotion by sprinkling coffee cream powder along the path to a subway station exit gate to help his friends, who could not read Korean, find their way out of the station. Unfortunately for him, others mistook the white powder as a terrorist substance, and an army unit was rushed to the scene.
According to the Army Capital Defense Headquarters, it recently received a report that a "white powder" suspected of being a terrorist substance was sprinkled all over the passenger platform of Namtaeryeong Subway Station. Accordingly, it dispatched a CBR (chemical, biological and radiological warfare) vehicle to the site to test whether the mysterious white power was a toxic substance.
At first, the chemical ops personnel went around the station measuring whether the air inside the station contained traces of a contaminant. When nothing unusual turned up, they collected a sample of the white powder sprinkled from the passenger platform to Exit Gate 1 of the station.
When simple tests conducted at the scene failed to detect any unusual signs, a sample was sent back to the Army CBR Headquarters for minute analysis.
As the army personnel were trying to identify the mysterious substance, police arrested a Canadian male who was suspiciously hanging around Exit 1 of the station on charges of having sprinkled the problematic white powder. They brought him back to a nearby police station for questioning and completely shut down the subway station.
The man, who works as an English teacher at a private language academy, claimed during the investigation that he sprinkled coffee cream powder from the station platform to Exit 1, where he and his friends had previously agreed to meet in order to go hiking on nearby Mt. Umyeon. He said he did so because his friends, who were also foreigners, could not read Korean.
The police found the Canadian's story highly plausible, but they had to keep him at the police station for about four hours until the army's test results were released. Because of this, the man was forced to cancel his hiking plans.
A Capital Defense Headquarters official said, "After the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the United States, reports of discoveries of white powders, including flour, have increased dramatically, and chemical ops personnel have become quite busy. Citizens must report suspicious materials when they see them, so in order to avoid unnecessary military mobilizations, please refrain from actions that might lead to misunderstandings." |
