The whole "what do I do? What the hell do I do now?!" part comes across as suggesting you need someone to hold your hand which is not something people want in a university professor. If you can't handle getting on a bus without your hand being held, how can you be expected to handle anything else? (not an attack, just a perspective)
You should have just said "great, I'll stay in a hotel near the airport and catch a bus in the morning." Problem solved. |
Yeah, I would agree with you if not for the fact that I had told him that I was trying to rent a car to drive there myself. Would have worked out fine except all my internet searches came up with zilch for that late at night. |
Don't listen to Gord, unless you like taking advice from people who aren't even here and ended up back home in their mother's basement.
You're lucky you didn't take this job. The director would have been a pain to live with. |

If you were coming in after 6 pm, there is no airport limo bus that goes straight to Cheonan from Incheon airport. However, you could have easily gotten on a bus to go to the train station and hopped on the KTX. 36 minutes later, you would have been in Cheonan.
Or, you could have stayed in the airport. It really is not dangerous. It's not like the airport is in the middle of the ghetto--it's on a freakin' island, and there aren't shady characters hanging around waiting to kill foreigners that stay the night. There are plenty of places to get a drink or some food, and sit or sleep. If you've never been to Korea, I can see how you might be aprehensive, but people all over the world spend long hours in airports with no problems. (usually long layovers)
I'm guessing your flight came in at 9 or 10 pm. That would have been 7 or 8 hours to wait until the bus came. Or, like mentioned, you could have been in Cheonan in about 2 hours, with the bus to the train station idea.
Was your employer going to pick you up at the airport?

Hi Justagirl,
my flight arrives at 9:30 pm Sept. 1st. I've spent a couple years in Korea in the past. Now, with the change of plans, I'm going to Taejeon where I have somebody to stay with. I think I know how I'm going to take care of it now.
The only reason I was apprehensive is because of all my luggage. I wouldn't be able to sleep because I would feel like I would have to keep an eye on it.
A decade ago, I would have stayed in the airport all night no problem with tons of luggage. At my age, I don't feel like staying up all night after a 14 hour flight.
Is the KTX really only 36 minutes to get to Cheonan? Wow. Must be the new bullet train. If I had known that, I would have done it. |

Westerners are far too fussy for most korean directors to handle. They expect us to behave like obedient slaves from the first phone call.
They aren't used to challenges/questions from their work force in any way, let alone actually communicating to them, from their cloud up on high. |

Yeah, I hadn't given much thought to the luggage issue.  At least you have something figured out on where you're headed.
The bullet train is awesome. It's 10,800-11,400 from Cheonan to Seoul, but so worth it. For one, you always get a seat (no ajumas trying to sit on your arm rest). Also the station is peaceful and just a great way to start the journey. The trip is much more scenic and every time we've taken the KTX, we've had a great day in Seoul.
Don't know if you're interested working Mon-Thurs in Cheonan, but our Canadian teacher is leaving Monday, so there's a spot open. He thought he might come back after a couple weeks, but needed to stay with his family for a longer time. PM me, if you're interested.

I don't think I'd be too happy about a suggestion to stay in an airport all night waiting for a bus. It sounds like the guy assumes you're a backpacker. Not very professional on his part. I think he should have suggested a hotel option to you. It's his backyard. I would expect that but that's me. I'd also be inclined to reconsider my acceptance of his job at that point pending further developments. It's weird and I don't like weird here.
The fact things fell apart so easily suggest that you were right not to take the job. Perhaps he changed his mind about you because of your contract revisions. Maybe you altered something important to him and he lost interest in you.
Maybe you both realized you weren't ready to get married after all.

The funny thing is that I eventually got him to admit that the contract is bad. He said he didn't want to change it because of all the red tape involved in getting a change approved because some of their funding comes from the Ministry of Education and everything needs to get approved. Oh, if only the Ministry of Education asked somebody from the MOL to look at the contracts.
I think I have an interview lined up with Sogang. I know they have a bad reputation and recently laid off a bunch of people, but ....

| My experience is that every contact with the Director before actually meeting him/her, starting work, and proving yourself accumulates into one continuous first impression. If you mess it up too much before they feel comfortable with you, they'll just put you on the wood pile. |

Well, tell me if you're thinking of something different, but I think the lesson is that if things need to be worked out, then it's better to wait for something better.
