| What's going on with the spraying of smoke-like stuff at night in Korea? Does this happen in your neighbourhood? I have been told it is a pesticide, but I don't know what exactly, DDT?? Is this bad or what??? A truck or bike comes shooting it everywhere, even when people are right in the line of fire......hmmmmm.... |

Yeah, it's some kind of pecticeide. I've finally figured out the times that the truck visits my neighboorhood so I set my alarm early and get up to shut all the windows before it comes. If I don't the stuff just floats right into my apartment. And man, does it stink!
Worse I think is that I see kids running after the truck that sprays near my school, screaming and waving their arms around in the toxic cloud. What kind of parents would let their kids do this? Also I see street vendors just sit there while all the food they have sitting out is exposed to this.
I don't think any other country in the world would tolerate this or even think it is necessary. |

I asked one of the teachers here. He says they do it only after rainy days, to kill bugs. However, they do it in our neighbourhood almost nightly, rain or shine. We shut all the windows at around 8pm every night.
Also, what's up with burning garbage everywhere? Maybe they only do this in rural areas...but this is so not good. Considering Koreans are so good about recycling, why is this happening? |

Nope, you see garbage burning in urban settings too. Though the burning of garbage is illegal in Korea (and we all know what the law means here) it is a common sight. I think it boils down to two reasons. One is tradition and the other is being too darn cheap to buy the garbage bags from the store.
I think Korea is a good example in the argument for garbage pickup to remain in the realm of tax-provided-for services.
As for the spray it comes at all times. Rain. No rain. Throughout all of Korea's 4 unique and distinct traditional seasons you will see the spray (and the accompanying children dancing in the toxic wind). |

When I lived in Thailand I always saw people burning garbage. The biggest reason I saw for it was that you have to pay garbage collection fees. This should definitely be a service paid for by taxes. |
