Well we had the meeting. we started off with 'you said you'd do it', went onto 'we'd really like you to do it', through 'its a great opportunity' towards, 'business is bad we need you to' and finally 'we think you're a bad teacher so we want you to teach this one because maybe you'll do better at it'. I just sat there and tried to think of as many homonyms for NO WAY!!!! as possible. Apparently working elsewhere is perfectly legal and besides the ownerhas the power to deal with any legal issues that might arise...... Anyhow we shall have another meeting to 'dicuss my future' at some undefined time in the future, Guess I'd better get my bags packed then..........
Anyone got a job going

Could you not simply phone (or threaten to phone Immigration) and ask to see if it is legal? Since you are in the right here, it is likely they will back down. Tell them that you will do it, only if Immigration okays it (by stamping your ARC) This gives both of you the option to back out without losing too much face. |

You are in tough.
I was told by an experienced Korean recruiter that all male hogwon owners claim to have the 'power'. It's an ego thing. I have also heard that immi can ok your visa to allow you to work somewhere other than what your immigration card says as urbanmyth alluded .
In the end you have to decide whether you want to work for that guy under those conditions. If not keep saying no. If yes then use Urban myth's idea.
Whatever you decide lay it on thick about not wanting to work illegally- you promised your family, you know someone who was caught, someone told you immi is inspecting now, your girl/boyfriend won't let you, it's against your sub-culture, it just isn't worth it under those conditions etc.
It's a power play. The guys a shmuck and he may do it again if you say yes. Maybe they are used to you saying yes a lot. Do you want to work there? Are you comfortable looking for new work or going to Taiwan or elsewhere? How much time is left on your contract? Are they jerks to work with/for otherwise? Do they treat you with respect and pay on time in full? Do you have a significant other here?
The big question is: Have you saved money? If not then maybe you're stuck for awhile. If yes then you have the power to go to Taiwan, China, Thailand or Pusan maybe to work out the remainder of your visa and come back if you wish. Maybe someone will PM you on how to take a round trip and get a visa again when you come back.
I'd say no with gusto. Or maybe I'd say yes and plan to catch a plane this Friday night or tomorrow. It's a big decision. Good luck. |

It's also called bribery. I like the sound of "the power", though. Sounds like something a superhero could do. |

Yeah I've got the cash to leave, I don't really want to leave, my working day is fine appart from intermittent crap like this. I'm paid in full and on time which is a big plus and my classes are all working well apart from my kindy class who are little horrors (fun enough, just 3yrs old.....). I also really like Korea at the moment but not enough to wan't to sit out 6 months then come back. My ideal scenario is to leave this job and be able to still work in Korea but obviously this requires a release letter and frankly with the current relationship with the management I can't see that being forthcoming. Worst case I have a few friends in Japan who can hook me up, I was just waiting till january/february when my contract is due to expire (or my next korean one you never know) and the Japanese public schools are hiring. At the moment its the not knowing if I'll have a job next week/month that is annoying me....
Thanks for the advice/support
Paul
P.S. despite being a Bunny I'm a guy (though this doesn't mean I couldn't have a boyfriend)........... |

I have aquired a class teaching one of the admin staff but I figure it can't be too bad as she is only a beginner...........
I IS DA WINNAH
Thanks guys
