here's an email correspondence about a job I was looking into for a teaching posiiton at a private school. so here's what i wrote:
Thank you for answering my questions. This job sounds like a great opportunity for me and I am very interested in speaking with your boss. I don't think I'll have too much too trouble teaching fundamental literature, history, or world government, although it may take some time adjusting to the workload. Is there anything I need to do now? I am assuming he will want to interview and I do have a number of questions to ask him as well, mostly regarding my involvement with student life outside of the classroom (I have heard that some teachers working at Christian schools require their teachers to be involved in many aspects of student life, such as required attendance at religious functions, community service, etc.) and I would also like to know more about the school's teaching and, more importantly, their religious philosophy and how it relates to students and the classroom (will Christianity have a pervasive element in lectures and in teaching materials or is it more by socio-religious affiliation?). I would also like to know specifically what is expected of me as a potential teacher to these students and, if possible, I would also like to speak to some of the foreign teachers there to get a feel of their backgrounds and their impressions on working for the school and living in Korea. Please notify me of any updates as soon as possible because if things do work out in the end, I will need to get the ball rolling in regards to tying up loose ends here and with the immigration dept. Hope to hear from you soon!!
and this is how he/she responded:
Ok, these are the things that you have to do dealing with religion.
1. every morning you must go to a morning meeting which is both a school meeting and a pray meeting...
2. every Wednesday you must go church at 12 pm.
3. You must teach your subject with God and the Bible in mind. All texts books have good references for you.
4. Since you have family here you will be expected to go to their church...
5. You will have to cut off all your hair and stone the your student if they fail the entry exam...
6. You will have do things like walk 20k with a Cross on your back chatting bible verses. This wouldn't be soo bad if they didn't make you wear the thorny crown...^^
7. You are not permitted to have sex with prostitutes and we have video camera in all your rooms and we are watching you 25 hours a day
8. The teachers are expected to patrol *beep* houses and local bars for students that may be in there...
9. Teachers must give 50% of their income back to the schools church 20% as tithing and 40% as love offering.
10. You will eat only white rice and water. oh I forgot ...don't drink the Kool-Aid. We don't want another Jim Jones incident like we had last year.
11. You are expected to wear pants in all your classes. If you don't have clean pants it is alright to wear boxers but you must keep the front button fastened.
12. No masturbating in class unless you lock the door.
13. You are not permitted to throw any students out the windows. but we will keep an open mind if you decided to do so... but you will have to pay for the window if it breaks... so my suggestion is open it first.
14. The school expects you to wash your hands after using the bathroom... I remind you about the video camera.
Other then those few rules this is a really normal school.

I was laughing while I read it. Let me tell you, hot coffee dripping from your nose is not cool!

| I loved it. I want to work for a school that has a sense of humor. |

I was thinking "run away!" until I hit number 5. Then I realised that this must be a joke. Pretty good one. I like the pants rule. "Wear clean pants. If not, you can wear boxers"

I particularly liked this one, as it is something I had just threatened students with.

| Nice post, but have you heard of the Hagwon in Suwon that actually does require it's students to pray before each class? I got a student in my class after he'd objected to the practice and regret not having renamed him Darwin. |

Ehmm...for those of you that haven't picked up on it, it's not from a Korean school, nor a Korean for that matter. But a new funny twist on mocking the hang-ups of hiring conditions over here. Well done. |
