Have been in Korea ten years and have survived thus far without a cell phone / beeper / whatever. But, a friend that's leaving is giving me his phone so, what do I do with it? (I won't use it much).

Have him transfer it to my name (or the wife)?
Have him cancel it and just give it me - then I register it later.
Register it for use with pre-paid cards?

Are all these possible? What are the pros & cons regards cost? Cheaper is best!

What kind of friend leaves you with such a burden?

You've been here 10 years?

You speak Korean?

Why not just ask at a phone store?

Well, I did try phoning a couple - they are almost always engaged - then I got trhu and was speaking to a foreigner who couldn't speak very good English (Indian). Talk about outsourcing ...

Well, I got the phone. Went to the LG shop - and the woman in there told me the previous owner had to cancel it - already done, I said.

Next she tells me a foreigner can't have a phone in their own name *&^%$# and that I have to have a Kroean 'sign' for it *&^%$#. And then she tells me there is no charge, and that I can't opt for the phone card - which she says is cheaper - with my type of phone *&^%$#.

Next day - today - I go in with a Korean 'sponsor' and she has changed her tune. I don't need a Korean sponsor (Korean -*&^%$#), I have to pay W30,000 (me - *&^%$#), and I can pay by phone card but it costs more (*&^%$#). Well, I forgot about the phone card and just registered it normally.

My questions is: Who trains these idiots?

(*&^%$# = my unprintable reply)
