Is enrollment at Hogwon's going down?

Word on the street is that the Korean economy is experiencing a downturn. Yet, here at the Hogwon things couldn't be more busy. 26 teachers and all working at least 7 hours! This is supose to be a slow month too!

My hogwan just got 12 new students last week. We now have 1 korean teacher, 1 chinese teacher and 1 foreign teacher- me and enrollment is up to 110 students.

HELP!

Same deal at my hogwon. They expected a massive decline in students this month, but I actually have in INCREASE for this month. I'm paid by the hour, so I can't say I really mind.

My hagwon has had a very slight reduction over the past year. But hardly noticeable: maybe 1 student less per 15, max.
The problem was more dramatic 2 years back at the beginning of the downturn- my hagwon then lost about 40 students over the space of 8 months.

Economic downturn means education is more important than ever. How will you get a job if you can't speak English???

Therefore parents find money for education.

Pretty standard experience elsewhere too...when the West experiences an economic downturn you find lots of people who find themselves unemployed will go back to school to make themselves more competitive in the marketplace.

Education is generally recession proof. My dad, a tenured professor, actually seems to look forward to recessions. Things get cheaper for him and he never has to worry about his job.

I think there was some fear this new government internet course to teach high school students for free was going to impact the hagwon business but by most accounts they really fumbled the ball and none of the kids find the lessons useful.

Nope. But I just repeat the mantra "language is in constant change" and pretend that everything's okay. Although in this case it's the proliferation of apostrophes rather than the usual disappearance. . .

Mine has marginally.

Not due to the economy but due to 2 new hagwons in the area.

The wonjang keeps telling me it is the economy though.

I don't know if he tells me this through pride or ignorance though.

Things have been looking up at my school recently. In April we had 96 students, but now in September we have 117, with two Korean teachers and myself doing the chores.
