What up? I am planning on coming over in a couple months and since I dont want to ship my computer I was going to copy my hard drive. Actually just my documents (or mostly), I figure the easiest way to do this is buy an external HD and copy to that then bring the HD over with me. Is it easy to do this, and would it be easy to copy the files unto a new computer that I buy there? Thanks for the info.

Yes, I did the same thing when coming here. I bought a Maxtor 160 GB External HDD w/ USB 2.0 & Firewire connections. No problems.

Copying the documents should be no problem. If you have files that are encoded only to work on your current computer (certain ebooks, etc), then you might have a problem with those.

You'll almost certainly have to reinstall your OS. If it's Windows XP, it could cause some problems when you try to activate your copy on more than one computer.

One of the tech gods will probably correct me, but IU think you can just pop your current hard drive out and buy a case for it to make it like an external drive.

How much is one of those data hosting services? I have about 20 gigs of stuff. I am going to sell this computer before I leave, so I will wipe the hard drive after I copy everything and before I sell it. I wont be reinstalling Windows because I plan on buying a new PC once I get there. What I need to know is how hard is is to copy from my old PC to the external (I was looking at the maxtor 160gb as well), to a brand new PC in ROK. It shouldnt be that bad if the OS is the same right?? By the way I am using windows xp home, thanks again.

Buy a DVD burner. You will probably want one anyways with your new system.

Don't pull out the drive....tougher to sell a computer with no HDD.

Flash drives are great, but have a long way to go interms of size and price.

I was going to go the route of the DVD burner because I will want one. But I will also want an external HD for my pictures, this is the majority of what I want to upload (18 gb). Not sure which way would be easier as far as traveling with, hooking back up...

Another option I was thinking of was taking the HD out of this system, bringing it over with me and installing it as a secondary drive in a new system. Then just buying a new HD to install in here so I can sell this one. Only thing is I might opt for a laptop once I am there. Then I would have to figure out how to upload to the laptop. Is this a pain in the a** to do, would I be better with one of the other options. Thanks
