| Korea is just an all-round dangerous place...drunken construction workers falling off of the rickety monkey-bars they stand on to build....big surprise. of course, these poor fellows weren't on this kind of structure 34 floors in the air (i hope), but you see where i am going. open-air, ground-level welding with onlooking elementary school kids is one of my favorites. |
There was a guy welding the metal on my new store front. He was looking right into the weld without protection of any kind. I had my wife ask him, "Are you dumb?" I am sure that she did not translate it that way. He replied. "Real men don't need eye protection."
Yeah buddy, come talk to me when you are 60. Actually, I will find him on the train with a harmonica. Hey maybe that is why there are so many blind people |

I have been going swimming for the last 6 weeks on a daily basis...the little swimming pool has no lifeguards..no supervision nada nothing. The office is in an area where you cant see the swimming pool and the people that work there sit and watch TV all day. If someone had trouble they would be dead for a while before anyone even noticed. There have been times where I have had the entire swimming pool to myself for up to 1/2 an hour |

Keeping workers safe
The number of laborers who suffered from industrial disasters and the economic loss arising from such mishaps have doubled in the past five years. Since 1997, 29 kinds of safety checks including regular checks on press machines and lifts were discarded, and another 29 safety measures including selection of safety control managers were eased. Regular checks on press machines are observed in Japan, Germany and Britain, and checks on lifts are carried out in Germany, Taiwan, France and Britain. Although safety rules are considered to be the minimum safety device for saving human lives and thus are being strengthened in advanced countries, Korea has run counter to the trend.

On the weekend, right outside exit #3 (I think) of Sinchin station, they were welding something, while people poured out of the station, coming within a foot or 2 of the flames.

It's not only the construction industry, look at the road construction sites and road repair crews, you whiz around a corner at 80KPH and theres a little man with a flag hoping to hell that you will change lanes in time. Back in Oz, I provided traffic controllers to councils and private companies and the amount of signage and safety gear we rolled out for simple road repairs was considerable, here it is minimal. They would know a safe work practice if it bit them on their bum. Our Manual of Universal Traffic Control Devices was in three parts and was 10cm thick. Safety in Korea is only smoke and mirrors. |

Smoke, yes.
However, the mirror broke when it fell off the Bongo. The string do not keep it on top of the cabinet and refrigerator in the truck. |

Be careful that you don't get hit by a car when you're running. |

Maybe they lived there as well.
Or were chained to their desks. |
