The temperature is cooling down up here in Gangwon Do and I've started thinking about the snow. Can't get an acurate report of general Korean snow conditions out of the locals. Can anyone tell me if they've been skiing or boarding here and what it was like? Will there be enough snow for me to build a booter on the hill behind my house?

I live near the Alps resort so if anyone's been there I would especially like to here from you.

Cheers.

Kangwon Do is well known for its winter weather, skiing, boarding and whatnot. Expect more snow and colder temperatures realative to the rest of Korea. From what I've heard, it's not dissimilar to southern Ontario in the winter!

Thanks for your reply. I'm looking at pictures of winter in Onario at the moment and it looks filth. I hope you're right.

hi, i'm from southern ontario...but southern ontario weather can differ quite a lot. where my town is situated on lake erie means we get hit pretty hard every winter (similar to buffalo, NY), i guess it's called lake effect snow, and there's a lot of it. a lot more, than, say, windsor. but i don't live in gangwondo, so i can't tell you.

but, my bf did his military training in gangwondo and he lived in ottawa ontario for 2 years, and he said it was similar, so there you go.
here's some pictures of my hood......oh Sad , i'm getting homesick just looking.......hahaha. no way.

I've been here since 2002 and I haven't seen even a single snowflake. Supposedly it snowed for an hour last winter, and twice the winter before, but I must have been teaching classes at the time because there was nothing on the ground in the morning nor again in the evening.

It just hasn't snowed here for years.

On Geoje Island, an hour south of Busan, off the southeast coast.

So it depends where you are in the country.

I hear Daegu is situated in one frigid deep freeze because of the surrounding terrain.

Over in Gangwon-do I have no idea.

I've been hearing people say it's gonna be a fully cold winter as well. Hope that means snow too. Starting to get a bit amped anyway. Even if there's not much the terrain parks are ment to be rad in Korea.

Yongpyeong is a great place to ride in Korea. 2 pipes, night riding, lots of elements spread out across 5 runs for the closet Kevin Jones/Tara Dakides in you.

I'll be there every weekend from Feb-end of season. Old guy on a Vanninen Sig. '59.

If it's cold, just get dressed accordingly. Don't do like some people here who would rather die from exposure than look unfashionable.

Well, I dunno if I'm the guy to "push" anyone. I have a grand total of 80 (maybe 90) days on my board since I first stepped in at Yongpyeong in 2002. I spent 2002-3 at a major resort in Canada, and learned to freeride pow-pow and threw the occasional 180. Big air scares the ship outta me, and the pipe leaves me with bumps and bruises. An attempt at a 360 on the last day of the 2003 season left me with a fractured shoulder blade. And this season will be my first riding without ganja.

All that being said, I'll definitely be around (after Jan: I'm going to ride Japan for a couple of weeks first) and love riding with friends.

Vanninen sig '59 with Flows ('cause nothing else will do)
2-tone grey MEC jacket
Much-stickered black helmet
Big smile
Old

See you there!

whatthefunk is right. There are only two places that are cold: Winnipeg from Dec-Apr and Vancouver in the summertime Laughing

Lived in Crested Butte for 4 years. Fucking cold. Average winter temperature about -15 F or so. But good snow.
