I say a little prayer every night that Korea does not replace another squat toilet with a Western-style throne.
My reasons:
a. Squat toilets are an interesting and colourful reminder of Korea's rich culture and tradition (phoney reason)
b. Squat toilets teach us the importance of good balance (phoney reason)
c. Squat toilets are easier to clean (phoney reason)
d. I had to put up with squat toilets everywhere for years when I got here (back when only the men and the tigers smoked) and I'll be damned if I'm going let you godforsaken, bellyaching newbies off so easy (real reason)
It wasn't all that long ago that I would regularly see shoe-prints on the toilet seats in the lobby restrooms of Seoul's finest deluxe hotels. So it ain't just you that's had a hard time adapting...

maybe it's because i'm drunk, but
wow,
you guys are a bunch of wimps.
squatters rule.
it's just the whole, "let's notify each other of where they are"....
face it , they're everywhere.
just take it as a given, and carry some tp with you.

Yes, I know they're everywhere. Perhaps it would make more sense to notify each other where they AREN'T. Restaurants and shopping centres that install throne toilets, toilet paper AND soap deserve our money. The rest can scratch their heads until they work it out.
Be honest - if expats didn't warn each other about anything, then newcomers would experience many more nasty surprises than they would otherwise. Then we would have more complaints here than we already do, and people like TMKATM would cackle gleefully at their misfortune and blame them for not doing their research. But of course, if you have an ounce of progressive logic here, you're damned if you do and damned if you don't. |

I'm so used to seeing squat toilets in other Asian countries that I wasn't suprized at all to see them here. They're all right to use. The position does make it a bit easier to eh, empty everything out. They can be a little tough on the knees though, especially if you've got a case of dysentery or the like. |

I'd rather have a semi-clean squat than a semi-clean "throne" ANY DAY!
But has anyone else here (GIRLS I s'pose) noticed that when you're...errr..."squatting" there are large gobs of spit in front of you... as in, the previous users coughed up a big one and spat it in front of them wile they were doing their "business?"
Does it not totally disgust you????? Now, no offence to the guys, but if I saw that in a men's toilet, I wouldn't be surprised. But in a WOMEN'S?? I always try to tell myself that it's gotta be the ajummas who do it... |

This one (or three) was in Ha Noi. And I thought Koreans loved to do everything together! |
