I think you picked a good time to go there. They just started their subway system last year, and the KTX to Seoul just started in April as well which makes it a bit faster if you want to go there. If you had been talking about Daejeon I would have advised a wait of a year (subway there starts March 2005 I think...or was it 2006?).

Kwangju has a great downtown area.
at night it really lights up. |
That is about all it has, and this will take away your cash pretty fast too. |
too true, after one year there i left with about 4000...pathetic. |
yeah...but think of all the memories.
...or is it all a drunk haze? |

you guys need to party at the back gate of chonnam uni...
you are going to the wrong place.. downtown rocks and all.. but, chonnam back gate is designed for students.. everything is cheap..
i went to a noraebang once with a friend that cost 2000won an hour..
the only time in 18 months in gwang ju i partied downtown was with you guys..
cmon... life in korea is bigger than just the ol western bars..
if you enjoy going to the western bars... may as well be back home..
gwang ju rocks...
the subway is kind of a joke at the moment.. it goes nowhere..
spose it had to start somewhere.. it'll be great when they can branch it off to other places. cut the traffic a little.. |

I hope I can make it back here with more than $4000!! But it sounds like a fun place, I've gotten a lot of mixed reviews. Some people say it's sleepy and others say it's got good night life. I guess either is OK with me, more fun or more money, I can handle both
I'm pretty much in denial that I'm going anywhere right now, but every once in a while it hits me and I sort of shut down and stare. And I have a constant "am I hungry or not?" feeling in my gut. Turmoil of emotion for sure! |

| It'll be weird as hell for the first few days, and for those first few days you'll probably want to bolt, but you'll get used to it. |

| Gwangju will treat you all right. The locals are real hicks, but you get used to that fast. Everybody, and I mean everybody has one foot still on the farm. An agricultural mindset is clearly here with all the a sorted baggage it brings. But this is one of the joys of Gwangju too if you can swim in the mix. The food is wonderful, and as you get your bearings on Korean cuisine, you will come to appreciate all the side dishes that come with your meal. The countryside is the real draw card, and I would recommend you get out of the city as much as possible. It will do you good. Gwangju calls itself an arts city, but in truth the arts are nil. It is all hype. You have cities of 50,000 souls in North America with more plays, live concerts, arts exhibits going on in a week, than you can find in Gwangju in month. The back gate of Chonnam University is a lot of fun, along with all the bars downtown, but they eat up your money. Gwangju lacks a center of gravity. It seems that people who live here are living with a sense of resignation that this is their lot, understanding knowingly that better things lie outside of Gwangju, up in Seoul. Gwangju receives trends, vibes, news, excitement, and it never gives anything back to the country but hopelessly delusional anti-foreign nut jobs. Enjoy. |

I'm just finishing my first year here in Kwangju and I think the city is really good for someone who is just being. The food and people are great. Its also easy to find things because there is usually only one or two of everything you need (starbucks, foreigner bars etc.)
As for the foreigners here, I personally am not a big fan of them but they tend to travel in packs. Just get in with the right people for you and you will have a great time. |

| Well, I just had an interview with JEL Institute in Seoul (Sanbon) and it went pretty well so it'll be a toss up between Sanbon and Gwangju. Looks like I'll be thinking in my sleep this weekend! |
