Skype is a program that allows you to call anyother user anywhere in the world for completely free. All you need is an internet connection, speakers, and a microphone. Digital sound, so there's better connection than a regular phone line. And like I said, if you are talking with another skype user, it's free.
You can call regular land lines with this program as well. That runs about 2 US cents a minute. It's a neat little program. Check it out. |

I've used a few of these, and none comes close to a regular phone line. They are compressed and also laggy if you are calling overseas. Right now I'm using one called GoodPhone. It works pretty well. Calls to Asia are great, but calls to North America usually have a lag of about half a second. I usually start each conversation by explaining why there's a wierd pause before I answer each question.
I'll try this one and see if it's better.
Can't beat the price tho! I use it instead of a regular land line even for local calls. |

Cheap for landlines, but otherwise, it's free for me to talk to another MSN Messenger or Yahoo IM user too. |

I've been using Skype since it came out last year and it is great. Before that, I had been using one of the MSN Messenger internet phone services and then after that Callserve. Doing a voice chat on messenger is like talking on a walkie talkie, it really shouldn't be compared to SKype in any way as they are so dissimilar.
Skype is based on a P2P client base, just like Kazaa, Edonkey, etc so rather than connecting through an actual phone company via an internet connection and then to the person you are calling, you are actually connecting directly to their computer. It is clear and the transmission is quick with no delay. In fact, the reception is much better than even the international calls which I have placed from my cell and landline, which always give me huge echoes.
Give skype a try and you won't go back. I have saved so much money due to this program.
Just remember that it is a program that is based on a computer to computer connection so the person you are calling must also have skype running on their computer and the ability to use a headset with a mic.
Skype also has the ability to do computer to landline calls on a fee scale as well as chatting. Overall, a great program. I really don't know why people haven't caught on to this more! There are only a couple dozen usernames located in South Korea at present. |

Yeah, that is called an internet phone. It is essentially a child of the old "handset" modems from years and years ago. If you were to see one, it looks exactly like a normal phone except instead of plugging into the wall with a normal phone jack, it has a DSL cord on it. Internet phones are also great BUT, they are not free. They will, however, give you the freedom to call anywhere you want, as I understand it anyways, though, I'm not sure that includes internationally. Skype on the otherhand, is free as long as you only use it for computer to computer connections. You can buy calling cards to call landlines. |

Any internet connection will do. If they are dialed in and running Skype, you will be able to contact them with ease. |

If it's 2 cents a minute to call a land line in the US, I thought I'd let you know that you can buy phone cards that are 3 cents a minute, and no lag time/echo problems.
Whatever we use, it seems to be pretty cheap.

I have noticed zero lag with Skype. None. I called my parents and asked them to hold the mike to their speakers to see if there was a lag. I heard my voice almost instantly through my speakers. Like jaz explained, it's much different than voice chat through a messenger program.
However you choose to call, enjoy. Just thought I'd let you know about another option. |
