hence the word "nearly"...............

a) suicide rate (fastest growing)

b) divorce rate

c) stomach cancer among men

d) industrial accident rate

e) internet addiction rate

f) traffic congestion (and growing)

g) private spending on education

h) fan death (ha!)

so the next time someone tells you "korea number one", you have your proof...

hahaha

sooo negative...

Actually, I went to Simon Fraser University which is known as having "the highest suicide rate" among Canadian Universities. Having this distinction means that SFU gets like 1 suicide every 5 years as opposed to 6 at other schools or something. I went there for four years and not one suicide!

Having taken some courses in industrial safety I couldn't help but notice how absolutely dangerous this building construction site was yesterday. 6 guys all 6 or so stories high standing on two metal poles (one foot on one pole, one on the other) set at probably double shoulder width (legs spread apart) and they're hammering away and using blowtorches and so forth. This all the while, a decent size crane is working at the same height as them about a foot away from where they are. Total accident waiting to happen.

As for the others, I'm pretty sure internet addiction is bad in most developed countries...they just stay at home rather than congregate at pc bangs. Traffic congestion isn't just bad in Korea...ever been to Jakarta? Kuala Lumpur?

Divorce rates are high in all of the industrialized world.

Only two things have pissed me off thus far: my director and bad drivers that really don't give a shit about you and your two feet. Drivers and traffic were bad in Jakarta but as soon as you went to walk across and put your hand in a stop motion they would actually stop for you....rather than aim for you!

are you sure about the suicide rate? I thought the suicide rate in Korea was growing the fastest, not that it's the highest. The rate of suicide among high profile figures might be the highest here though -- disgusting trend, in my opinion.

Also, the divorce rate statistics are skewed by the fact that the rate of marriage has suddenly decreased but they are using that decreased rate against the current divorce rate-- if you wait a few years the rate of divorce will also decrease (less marriages=less divorces).

As for the rest of them, yeah, probably. But you should really state your sources, no?

Korea is #1...

* in mobile phone use per capita

* in women's archery

* the largest shipbuilding area (here on Geoje!)

* the oldest writing machine (contested, but with some evidence)

* the highest amount of personal spending on education per capita (hagwons)

Just to add some balance. Very Happy

Close, but not quite. Slovenia is number one.

South Korea is number 2.

Highest suicide rate per capita. Highest use of tobacco per capita. They are doing their best to be number one in all the things that you don't want to top the lists in, including a piss poor public education system. Smile

Do you know this to be true, or are you just guessing? Because a lot of countries in the world have hakwon-type schools all over the place. In fact, I'm guessing that Japan outdoes Korea on this one because not only do they have cram schools, but I'm sure they are much more expensive there.

Also, I've heard that Korea is #1 or #2 in automotive fatalities per capita. And by the way, statistics show that every year more than half of those deaths are pedestrian deaths. Doesn't surprise me at all seeing that here in Korea, crosswalks are a total waste of perfectly good paint, as no drivers ever pay attention to them.
