Last night I had a second phone interview for a job in Seoul. Both interviews went really well and I was very excited to teach at the school. At the end of the interview last night the interviewer said that he hoped to see me at the end of October and that if I was interested in the position to email them and they would send me a contract. I said on the phone that I was definitely interested and within an hour of getting off the phone I had turned down my other offer and sent them an email saying I would like the position. Today I got a reply which said that the position had already been filled and that I could reapply in February if I wished. Is this something I can expect to happen again? I'm really not impressed and, honestly, I'm pretty down about the whole situation.

That kind of thing happens. Don't burn any bridges until you've at least got a signed contract, or even better- the plane ticket in hand.

Yes I had that happen. I think employers like to get several people to accept their position because, from experience, they like to cover their own ash. On the other side of the pond people accept a position and then get a better offer the next day and a) rescind their acceptance b) (more common) drop off the face of the earth leaving the director wondering when the paper work is coming down the pipe...

Yeah man, hang in there like myself. I just had an interview with a school I want to sign with but I have to wait a couple days until they get back to me. The lady even said she was really impressed with me but that she had more interviews to conduct. No offense y'all but I hope you do shi**y interviews because it will be a sweet job. Otherwise, good luck.

THis is common. As Peppermint said, you are only home free once you have signed the contract. I had this happen to me twice last year where I gave a very strong affirmative answer to a job offer only for them to retract the offer a couple of days later. I turned down other job offers in the meantime. String them along just as they do us, it is the only way to protect your butt.

i still say it is very hard and you take a big risk applying for a job when you are out of korea. you can't see the school, fellow colleagues, meet the manager etc etc.
