Best advise to a student who wants to learn English...

If you want to learn English STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM CHURCH!

I don't have anything against God or Christianity (certainly not, I worked at several Bible camps). It's just that if you want to learn English you need to give up Christianity. All my students who regualrily attend church never have anything to say.

A typical conversation with a Christian student:

You: What did you do this weekend?
Them: Went to Church.
You: How was it?
Them: Good.
You: Um..that's good that it's good. Anything else...?
Them: No
You: Um..OK. Very nice.

If this is the criteria for learning English, then my students also need to give up:

school
free time activities
hakwons

That's funny, I teach one advanced kid with the bible. He is a really devout kid, really smart and as soon as we open the book, we have lots to talk about.

'What did you do on Saturday?'
'Computer game'
What about Sunday, what did you do on Sunday?'
'Church'
'Do you like Church?'
No
'What about God, do you pray?'
No
'What do you do during the week?'
'Study'
'After study (with hand gestures)?'
'Study'
'Do you play Dakchi?'

Ten minute rant about how he lost his big red monster to Shawn who cheated, but then won four from Mike, but they were smaller etc etc..............Dakchi is the new religion

Definitely avoid hagwons with native english teachers. They are nothing but a scam and the child's English will not improve.

If it were legally possible I would love to set up a week-long program where one flies a kid out to the middle of nowhere, gives him/her a small bit of money, and instructions on which town to go to. Maybe a few other instructions too. They get to use it by themselves in a life or death (they're actually being watched though) situation. Much better than going to a hagwon overseas and going back to their parents' house at night.
