Like I wrote, found the picture of an 1895 "Korea Post" stamp. 1895 was before the invasion.

Before what invasion? I think the last time Japan invaded Korean was under Hideyoshi in the late 1400s.

You have to invade a country before you can colonize it. Strangely enough, nobody talks about how the Germans 'colonized' Poland.

I think you need to read a bit more about how the 1910~ occupation of Korea came about.

"Korea" came from the first foreigners to visit this country during the "Koryo" dynasty. The mis-pronunciation they sailed away with stuck, hence "Corea".

As for "C" or "K", during the occupation, the Japanese changes what was indeed originally "Corea" to "Korea", simply for "K" being after "J" and the olympics were seen as being inportant enough to warrant such a spelling change.

Corea is the original spelling of the country from the first foreigners, the Arabians, spelling. "Korea" is a Japanese change that just stuck.

CalifasGirl,

Have you noticed how many Koreans want to leave Korea? Why? What makes your parents stay in America? When do they plan to return to Korea? Will they live in Korea after they retire? Are you aware of the discrimination and racism in Korea?

Hi Real Reality,

I don't know why Koreans are leaving. The job market is hell. My uncle is doing a job that is far below what he used to do. I noticed several Koreans are in the same situation as my uncle. I heard there are families committing suicide together because of the economic situation.

My parents came in the '70s when Korean engineers and scientists came to the US. They never ever planned on leaving the US, even for retirement. They are US citizens as is the rest of my family on my dad's side except for one aunt in Busan. They came to the US so that their children could have a better life, which is what all Asians say when asked why they immigrate.

I am well aware of the discrimination and racism in Korea. Koreans do that to each other here. How Korean is someone? is an issue here. I will never be Korean enough for many, and I'm too Korean for some. That's the problem with being 1.5 generation. I'm not Korean enough for the 1st generation, and I'm too Korean for the 2nd generation. My best friend is African American, so I have seen the weird looks from some Koreans as well. I have experienced similar issues with African Americans as well, so it goes both ways.

There is just as much discrimination in the US. Don't think Korea is the only place. The difference is that the US has much stricter laws on discrimination, so it's harder to discriminate publically like Korea does. Discrimination in the US tends to be more covert to sidestep the laws. There are many Neo-Nazi groups that have sprung up as a reaction to this. I am very well aware of the discrimination in the US since I am a racial minority. If you are Caucasian, you are probably experiencing racism for the first time in your life, so perhaps now you can understand what the ethnic minority groups in your respective countries must go through. This doesn't make racism or discrimination right, but it does help you to understand other minority groups to some extent.

On the surface that would seem logically sound but, in the case of Korea, it isn't. No armed invasion. No battles or skirmishes. Just a bunch of treaties.
