This does not answer you as far as where you can buy vegimite or marmite, cause i dont think it is sold anyplace. even the black markets in Namdemun do not have it. Cant you just have some one mail you that stuff from home?

This reminds me. I am living in Korea now and I have been looking for Vegemite for months. Does anybody know where i can buy some. I would even settle for Marmite if I have to.

Long live Vegemite!

Sorry, I can't help you .............. My wife and I bring a year's supply with us each time we come here to start a new contract. What's more, we guard it carefully. If ever there is a fire the first thing I will grab as I rush out the door is the vegemite. Oh, I suppose I should really grab my passport as well.

well I'm wondering.... what did all of you expect to be eating when you came here??? I mean it is a foreign country and all and you dont exactly all teach at 5 star restaurants so shouldn't you have expected to be eating things that you would consider "odd" back home? I'm Canadian born and raised but I'm ethnically asian so I've eaten alot of similar foods to what I've been served here by the school and I think its good. Its all not exactly what I'd be eating if I was back home but I expected this to be the case so I'm not complaining.

I've eaten over a year and half of korean school lunches and Monday's was pretty foul.

After watching my students chow down garlic bread with vanilla pudding spread on it as a sidedish to kimichi spaghetti I think I had seen just about everything.

Perhaps school lunches are foul everywhere but this particular display of the spam stew was nasty. I stand my OP it was the worst school lunch ever.

If you eat other parts of the pig, following ethics you should eat SPAM or similar types of meat.

I'm going through these responses, and unless I've missed something SPAM STEW is the worst you can come up with??

At our school all the teachers, foreign and Korean, have to eat with the students, at least until the students are finished. This is a major point of contention in our battles with management. Mostly, the food is good. It has gotten better. We regularly have bulgogi or something less, um, culturally unique.

But then we get the Malchi Bokkeum. Stir-fried Anchovies. Noodles with Eyes.

Now, I'm one of those gastronomical masochists who love anchovies on pizza, but I still have trouble with the dried ones looking up at me from a puddle of vegetable oil and garlic stems.

And even worse, there are days when that's basically all they're serving. We can always tell when the owner is about to spend money on another trip to China when the lunches start getting bad, so bad the kids won't touch them.

Seems during the Korean war the Koreans were starving, so the GI's gave them their let over food. We have a resturant here who serves their version, called "garbage souP' Has in it chunks of spam, a bit of pepparoni (wish I knew where they got the peparoni), buts of Ramyan, bits of spaghetti, water and hot paste.

But, in a good restaurant, this food is excellent, even knowing how it came about. I have eaten it in numerous places and it is nearly always good. One of my favourite dishes in Korea. Boo Day Jig Gay. 댸 I think it is spelt. Wonderful food.

Depending on which Korean you are talking too I guess, but I have never heard anyone call it that.

Meh.

Whiners.

All of you.

I taught in Korea for three years. Saw a lot of weird things and strange foods. But I'm in China now.

Try bumblebee salad (yes, with real bumblebees!)

Termites and Garlic stirfry

Chicken feet...pig noses....

mouse kebabs....

Silkworm stew, steamed fish head, cow eyeball soup...

I would die for Spam Jigae or Kimchi Spaghetti again!
