just a tip...if you go to use an ATM machine, the type which you have to to go in the doors after the bank is closed, be careful.

i went in kookmin bank atm place about 10pm and there was this loud announcement in korean and i didn't understand, so i continued with my withdrawl. the machine was in the process of counting the bills and all of a sudden all the power -- the atm, the lights, everything went down. automatic lockdown. i tried the doors only to find i was locked in!

the motion detectors got me and a loud alarm when off, lights came on. but i was still locked in. about 15 minutes later (during which several kind passerbys had gathered at the door -- how's THAT for feeling like a zoo animal! haha!) security came and the guy was pretty cool and realized what had happened, wrote me some kind of certificate to take to the bank the following day to get my money.

aahhh, the adventures continue. so...remember, if you hear a really loud announcement when you go in the ATM, get out quick.

haha.... Laughing

The same thing happened to me when I first arrived in Korea. Maybe my 2nd week here. Except i was with a co-worker. Only problem was that there were no motion detectors nor passerbys. Just a lady on the phone who spoke no English (me being a newbie spoke no Korean, same with my co-worker who lived in Korea for 1 year Confused ).

After about 1.5 hours of our non-stop calling, they finally got us out.

That's your last-resort-hotel right there!!!

Homeless in the cities of the world would jump at that kind of comfort! Korea must have the most opportunities for those with no roof over their heads to crash in..... PC bangs....all-night saunas.....ATM huts....

Great security.

Why is it that the ATMs here in Korea shut down at 10 o'clock at night????

No idea, but still better than in Japan where they closed at 5 or 6... When I left 1 year ago some were open till 7 even! In Japan they said it would be 'dangerous' if they were open all night...

There are probably fetish clubs in Tokyo where you can go and pretend you're using an ATM late at night though.

The reason is that drunk ajosshis would spend away the family savings on "service girls" if they stayed open that late.

Weren't there locks at the bottom of the door that (if you are inside) you can release manually? This happened to me once. I just reached down, and turned the locks and I was out. It locked automatically behind me when I left.

well, i was a little dazzled by the siren and such, but after i noticed that there were turn locks at the TOP of the door....which didn't help me any because the doors were so tall, and i'm only 5'2"!
