Anyone can use "guy." Can you take a North American who uses the word "bloke" seriously?
How about "brilliant" to mean "great"?
Cheers! (And how about "Cheers")

Only those who are members of the commonwealth may use the term bloke. All other are pithy impersonators. Smile

Canadians are part of both North America and the Commonwealth. Hence we can have our choice of slang. I say bloke, brilliant, mate, and cheers and never get a funny look.

I'm Canadian and I just PMed an English guy using the words bloke, cheers, and mate. It felt like a cultural experience, though probably because I was half drunk.

Of course they can - I welcome any improvemnt in their vocabulary .. Wink

And, if from the right background, they can also use "chaps" and "chums".

NO NO NO!
Here's an official list of words / phrases that people from North America can't use, and are strictly reserved for Aussies / Kiwi's and Brits, cos if Americans and Canadians say them they sound like Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins (Cor Blimey Mary Poppins!)...

Bloke, Cheers, Mate, Fella, Pint (of Beer), Going out for a beer, Cuppa (tea), Alright?, Football, Chaps, Chums, Spiffy, Jolly, Lav'ly (Lovely), Bloody (Hell), Strewth, Tinny (can of beer), Nobhead, W***er...

and i'm sure there's more beside...!
Wink

Shocked
Well there's proof it's OK cos I didn't even notice.

Typing stuff's one thing, but it always sounds slightly wrong to my ears when anyone other than Brits say "Cheers" to mean 'Thanks'.

Whatever though, as long as I'm allowed to say
"Are we all set? Good to go?" and
"Hot enough for yer?"
it doesn't bother me
