Hi all...

I always hear that there are tons of running events happening all over Korea every weekend, but it's sometimes a little bit hard to find out about them soon enough to register. So for anyone who might be looking for one in the Ansan area, here's one coming up. Registration has already started and is apparently limited to the first 2000 people who register:

WHAT: "4th Ansan Environment Marathon" (ahh, but it's not 26 miles...races
here are all called marathons for some reason regardless of the length)

WHEN: November 14th 2004, Sunday at 9:30am

WHERE: Ansan city, Dan Won Ku, Hwa Rang, Yoo Won Ji (resort), at the
parking lot of the drive-in theatre (the website below with give you better info).

Distance: 5K run
Start time: 10am
Qualification: have the desire to put one foot in front of the other at a
slightly quicker pace than normal Wink
souvenir: T-shirt
entry fee: none...so I understand (check the website to be sure)

HOW to enter: apply at http://www.ansan.org/marathon It's not in
English...so interested waeguk people without enough Korean to figure out a simple form in Korean (that'd be me too) can ask some of our gracious Korean friends/staff people for help in registering. Good luck and hope you have fun!

If you have any questions or if you learn about other races happening I'd love to hear about them Smile ~Cari, [email protected]

She's a newbie, Bobster. Why don't we point her in the right direction? Wink

Post the info on General Discussion. That's where it belongs. And if one of the mods is feeling particularly nice, they might even move it for ya.

Yes, if a thread is about life in Korea for ESL teachers, then the General Forum is usually the place to be.

Quote:
[FYI: If it concerns life in Korea but not about ESL teacher experiences (e.g., Real Reality's background news stories) then it belongs on the Current Events Forum.

If it concerns life for ESL teachers but not particularly about Korea in any obvious way, then it belongs on the Off-Topic Forum.

There are exceptions, like with a specific question needing information in a specific answer rather than a discussion; it belongs on the Q&A Forum.

Part of what us mods do is direct threads to the appropriate forum to help everything go as smoothly as possible.]

Now, back to the thread topic... Why is a 5 k run called a marathon in Korea?

No idea why....but it seems to be the case.

The first Korean "marathoner" I met here impressed me so much with how nonchalantly he talked about the numerous marathons he ran each year. Then when I signed up for one with him, I learned, 10K meant marathon too and he had yet to run what he later called a 'pool' (full)-mah-rah-tohn Wink

*For people interested there are a lot of full marathoners here in Korea and it is possible your town (mine has one and it's a relatively small town) has a marathon club of sorts. I just recently signed up with one and they train hard-core. I should add, they also play and do a bunch of fun social things together besides running. http://cafe.daum.net has info for Ansan area (and possibly other areas too...however I can't give details because I can't yet read Korean well). Happy running
