To those who have only seen some of the more commercial Korean films, I can see why you wouldn't like Korean cinema. I was in the same boat until I found some good directors. Now I know Korea ranks with any country in the world.

Kim Ki-Duk.
Lee Chang Dong.
Hong Sang-Soo.
Im Gwon Taek.

My current favorite three movies are:

Hwangsanbeol ("historical comedy" dealing with a famous battle between Shilla and Baekche...and a few other things).

On the occasion of remembering the turning gate (terrible title in English, I know. Korean title Ȱ ߰.) Director Hong Sang Soo

Peppermint Cany is one haunting vision that has not left me for months now. Director Lee Chang Dong.

Hey, oneiros. I learned swears from Chingu, too!

There are a lot of great Korean flicks that have come out in the last couple years I need to see...

Not at all! I have friends who will be happy to get that information passed on to them.

I enjoyed the "The Good Lawyers Wife" or whatever it's name is. It stars Mun Sor Ree. I kinda identified with the small town atmosphere of the young guy going to the movies on his bike and all that. Showed Korean life in the small town setting real good.

I enjoyed her in "Oasis" as well. She was also the female star in "Peppermint Candy"

She was my husband's "nuna" back when they were in university. I've only seen her in Hyojadong Barber (if that's what it's called in English). That's who you mean, right?

"Nuna" means big sister. So CM probably means that she was her husband's senior in University (in a class ahead of him).

Yes, and they were friends (although not chingu, as that would mean they were born in the same year). I get the feeling there may even have been a hint of a crush on one side or the other, but Korean men are pretty tight-lipped about stuff like that.

I've heard she is quite impressive in some of her roles. But I hate her. Nah, just kidding! Laughing

Jeburo (spelt wrong I'm sure)
Very little dialogue so you don't need the subtitles
About a spoiled brat who gets dropped off at his grandmothers home deep in the countryside for her to care because his mums divorced and needs to work (a common occurence these days).

A little out of the ordinary, but a nice story none-the-less.
Perfect date movie.
