I went to re-join my building's health club. They wouldn't let me join, citing that I didn't re-sign at the beginning of the month, and I couldn't join again until next month.

WHAT!!??? So I want to spend money with you, and start again, but you're penalizing me for not joining straight through every month?

Their reasoning was that they only take the money to the bank once a month, so they only allow signups at the beginning of the month.

That's got to be the dumbest excuse I've ever heard.

The place is hardly maxed-out, too.

You'd think they could just pro-rate the cost and charge me for 1 1/2 months, but no.... apparently that's too much work. The only reasoning I can find for this is that they got burned for Chu-sok, and lots of people didn't sign up because they knew they'd be too busy. Maybe they're angry about it, and want to put some strange new sign-up law into effect.

Weird.

Can't you rejoin the gym and pay at the end of the month?

Same thing happen to me. I told them to stick it up their asses and told 6 other members what happen. Ending story, we all joined anothe gym the following month. And before signing up...we made sure that the same thing would not happen again. We were told...no problems here...join anytime...and we did...payment is prorated.

That's dumb. The fiasco that ensued when I was trying to get back into my apartment after I locked myself out also made me wonder about the building's organization. One friggin' locksmith who can get me back in my place, and he's not in any way affiliated with the building. Confused

I'm thinking about joining the dinky gym...guess I'll have to wait now.

Sounds logical, right????

NO!

I offered to pay 30,000 won (the cost of the rest of this month plus next month) but was told they wouldn't do it!

Excuse: We only go to the bank once a month. This is pure laziness on their part. They have a safe in the office.... duh!!!

I told them I'd be looking at other gyms too.

The stupid thing is that this health club exists for the people in our building. I'm in the process of finding the bald manager-guy and ripping him a new ass. I might look up that ajumma who was elected in charge of the building association and see if I can't make headway there, too.

Hey, zzyfer, you know the talk late 20's-something Korean guy down front that speaks the best English? He told me today that he might be leaving. He had a fight with the building manager over something he thought was "stupid" too. That would really suck because he's one of 2 people here now that speak English. The other one is -- you guessed it -- the health club guy.

I thought they had their own key copy? Must depend on if you rent or buy? Did your school buy?

I know the old neighbor down the hall has pulled "the cord" at least once, and they came up with a key and got right in to check on him.

Just renting, but aren't all of the locks the same anyways? Confused

It's just ridiculous how much trouble it was to get back into my apartment. Yes, it was a Sunday, but I seriously thought that I had to spend the night at the jimjjilbang or something.

Heh...the cord. I never tried it and no one told me what it was for, but I figured as much.

And yea I know that guy. He just helped me the other day in registering my car for the parking garage - total lifesaver. That's a real shame if he leaves...

You may know already that we can set an alarm in our apartment. I forget how to do it, but I've tripped it in my co-worker's place when I was feeding their fish. They forgot to turn it off before I came. Sensor is on the door.

The people downstairs started talking over the speaker and I just said, "Chay-Soong-Hamnida" several times and they didn't bother coming up. I suppose since they knew it was a foriegner's place, they just assumed I was the one living there.

About the key, I wondered if they kept a copy if people are just renting. Apparently not??

Have you ever tried a Jimjibang close to here? I'm sort of scared to go in there as a foriegner... done that in Hamilton Sauna, but here... hmmm... chicken!

Derrek - maybe no consolation, but it is the same style at our community health center here in Ui-wang . . .

Each month, members have 1 week to renew expiring memberships. Either 1 month, or 3. Nothing else.

1 day at the beginning of the month, at 5:30 frickin am, they have the 'open' registration for any slots open.

But here is the beautiful part: after standing in line, they maaaayyy have a slot open. BUT!!! You have to tell them WHAT TIME YOU WILL BE USING THE FACILITIES!!! Guess what happens if you pick a time that is full?

That's right - - - 'Sorry! That time is full! Try back next month! NEXT!'

Rolling Eyes

G.

(at 33k/month, I just keep renewing - even throught the month of my vacation in summer & 10 days off for Chusok. I ain't losing my spot! Evil or Very Mad )

The one in the building across the street has a bulgama sauna joint on the 9th floor. It's pretty nice and I didn't get any hassles the one time I went there, but the sauna isn't the greatest. There's one in the Aju Uni area that is spectacular.

I am one of those. I always showered at home for two reasons.

1) Don't like Korean guys trying to check out my schlong

2) Don't like all the spitting they do on the shower floor

Yeah. Shudder. There's a couple gyms near my place within walking distance. If I joined, I'd easily walk home without taking a shower (there). Back home I've always belonged to gyms within walking distance of my home or a place where I can drive to in my own car and park. No showering and worrying about picking up some foot disease or having to watch guys jerk themselves off in the shower room for me.
