I think it is like John Kerry said "It is like Tony Soprano giving a talk on law and order.

I think the issue with the school is that this is very much a "Don't ask - Don't tell" society.

Yes, my students told me that many establishments have already gone out of business because of the recent crackdown. They had read this in the paper.

I was in Gecko's last night and it had more women in there than I have ever seen. They kept coming in in pairs, my guess is that some are working undercover. All of Itaewan was swarming with police and MP's last night

For thinking prostitution lessens loneliness.
And for engaging in such risky behaviour.

One can speculate that perhaps he wasn't the most attractive or charming piece of work in his neighborhood. It's safe to assume that he wasn't subtle about his intentions. Korean guys pull it off, so to speak, every day and night, but this guy obviously had a different ptofile. The hypocrisy of the sanctity of the Korean marriage is verified when the statistics show that 70% of Korean married men have extra-marital sex. So the waygook was simply doing what the locals are doing; but he was busted. Clearly, he wasn't discreet.

You've only got part of the story here.

A massage parlour in Taejon was raided and they got the "guestbook." One repeat appointment was to the university dorm. When this hit the papers, parents were screaming for blood, asking how a uni could allow a dorm-living student to order massages. What kind of school were they running?

This put the pressure on the uni to find the guilty student, and when it came out that it wasn't a student at all, rather the American ESL teacher, there's wasn't much they could do besides fire him.

I read it in the papers.

According to a friend, who'd know about such matters, this guy's fatal mistake was bringing the girl back to his place. Even if you live on your own, and pay your own rent, it's "common sense not to bring them home- where they could steal your stuff, or harass you later. That's what yeogwans are for!" (his words not mine)

Whatever you may think about the rights and wrongs of this or the hypocrisy of society, whether Korean or other, his contract probably includes a clause about criminal behaviour resulting in dismissal without rights. However prevalent it may be it is against the law.

Some contracts also have a Morality clause, not to cause damage to the reputation of the university. I know... I know.... but, saving face is huge in this country. I am guessing that a Korean prof would have to resign as well, if the situation escalated this far.

I read it in the papers.

This is a lot different to "English teacher fired for using prostitute."

I bet you'd be fired from most any job anywhere for dragging your place of employment into the papers with this kind of publicity. Sounds fair enough to me.

Thanks for the extra info King of Kwangju. The paper I read obviously didn't publish all the details.

hey all, for starters, i know the guy and the situation. lets get the facts straight. he wasnt married as one poster suggested, he wasnt "a repeat" offender, just dumb enough to use a credit card for payment which was what they traced, and the other was that he was caught in the raid which was done after it was made illigal, though the actual act was commited BEFORE the law was passed. all in all, he didnt do anything illegal, he is a stand up guy so leave the judgements of his charachter to yourselves please and also who cares what he did, many a man has done it before and will continue to do so. i think it was harsh that he got asked to leave knowing so many of his korean counterparts could almost have certainly done exactly what he did. anyway, hope this clears a bit up for some, laterz

He used a credit card?? And brought her onto campus??

What? You too? Did you think prostitution was legal in Korea? It may have been a common practice among locals, but surely you and he knew it was still illegal. Even the Lonely Planet tourist guidebook states that prostitution is illegal here and that the red light districts are for locals only.

Dumb and dumber.

He might be a nice guy but what he did was plain dumb. He should be kicking himself rather than getting angry at Koreans.

On campus with a credit card. Geez. Talk about loss of face!

If he dragged the uni into the papers, probably yes.

I was once fired from a uni, or more like "not asked back for a second contract", because I was seen talking to a group of female students for an "unusually long period of time" after class (10 minutes) and some uptight little secretary "reported" it. While I have it on good authority from a long timer at the uni that the top mathematics professor was boning three students and his secretary, and presumably his wife too when he could find the energy.
