What are current salary increases for renewing contracts at universities? If you are renewing after a successful year at a good university, what should be the increase in salary? Your evaluations have been very positive. The current salary is 2,000,000 won per month. |

The few people that I've talked to who work for Korean Universities say their salaries have decreased rather than increased over the past 5 years?
Why should you guys get an increase when no one else does? If you want an increase, find another workplace or start teaching privates! No employer wants you to stick around for more than two or three years, anyway!
(TIC, of course!) |

While we don't get raises at the time of signing a new contract, we do get an annual cost of living increase of 5.5 - 11 % in June or July (same as the Korean professors at my university). This is applied retroactively to the beginning of March. |

You are lucky. You receive the same treatment as the Korean professors. The foreigners where I teach are not given any thing approaching what the Korean professors receive. Foreigners receive the lowest salaries and the lowest pay increases. Cost of living increases are non-existent for foreigners. |

Memories
[Foreign professors] tend to be treated as hired hands, without academic standing, and lacking the possibility of career advancement or tenure. They must submit to yearly contracts (compensated at a rate only 60 percent of their Korean peers) while walled off from the permanent Korean faculty who benefit from travel, research funding, sabbaticals, etc....According to the Samsung Group's chairman, Lee Kun-hee, to succeed globally, Korea must forgo the thought that Korea and being Korean is superior, and foreign specialists must be treated with respect.

Wouldn't that be nice, treated as a fellow, instead of an outsider. Pay rise though, anywhere between 5-10% would be fair. |

Where's the option for nothing?
Foreigners at my uni are offered contract increases ranging from W100,000 per month all the way to no increase. Depends on how they like ya. And whether or not you kiss ass. |
