Firefox Web Browser (opensource):

http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

"The new Firefox Preview Release empowers you to browse faster, more safely, and more efficiently than with any other browser. Join more than 4 million others and make the switch today—Firefox imports your Favorites, settings and other information, so you have nothing to lose."

This browser (and Mozilla, the parent project,) offer many extensions to the basic web-browser: http://update.mozilla.org/extensions/ . As with all software, caveat emptor, but most things I've tried are great.

Nice list , GM.

I would add in NetCaptor as a browsing alternative, CAM UnZip for .zip file extension handling, ISOBuster for general decompression (very good in tadnem with a file swapping prog), QTAlternative, and mention the 'usual suspects' for both spyware & AVirus purposes. We already covered some gaming rings in another thread.

A question about metapad: I am a wordpad junkie - never messed with MSWord; wordpad pretty much does anything/everything I need for wp purposes.

Advantages, if any, for a user like me to switch?

Regards,

G

(ps - got turned on to Ifran from fs-services a few years back. Great prog!)

If you are into web page design and need HEX codes for colours or, even more difficult, need to find an exact HEX to match an existing colour try out CPick at

Mihi Est Propositum (in Taberna Mori) - It is suggested I die in the tavern

Mihi Est Propositum
In taberna mori.
vinum sit oppositum
Morientes ori
Ut dicunt cum venerint
Angelorum chori
Deus sit propitius
Huic potatori!

(I should like to end my days
In a tavern drinking;
May some Christian hold for me
My glass when I'm sinking
And all the angels they cry out
When they see me sinking:
"God be merciful to him
For his way of thinking!.")

A slightly expanded commentary on those lines can be found here http://www.association-gauthier.org/anglais/1600a/gautier-map1137a.html. I studied a lot of Faustian themes years ago, runaway monks, and forbidden knowledge.

But that's a little off-topic Wink .

gmail notifier (beta) (freeware)

http://toolbar.google.com/gmail-helper/

"The Gmail Notifier is a downloadable Windows application that alerts you when you have new Gmail messages. It displays an icon in your system tray to let you know if you have unread Gmail messages, and shows you their subjects, senders and snippets, all without your having to open a web browser."

If you run Firefox as a browser you can download a ton of little extensions such as this one and add them in. Another reason to abandon IE - like you needed one anyway Rolling Eyes

This one is actually a standalone windows application from Google.

The extensions are pretty handy and there are about a million of them.

CNet often has spyware and adware bundled with it's downloads. Wink

If there is something you want just head over to sourceforge and search for it, all the good open source programs are there.

For text editing I use notepad++ it rocks.
