Don't get me wrong.
I like Korea.
but I need to say, that one thing that really drives me crazy is the noise pollution. It's everywhere. You walk down the street and some store is blowing out crappy techno music.
I rememebr one time he speakers in my nearby Burgerking broke down. It was great. It was like the clouds had parted. I could hear myself think.
Right now, the Ajuma working here in the PC pang has to have noise going on. So she plays this horrible music. I want to listen to some nice classical music. But no, noise pollution rules the day. |

| I don't think Koreans are happy unless there is a lot of noisy racket actually. In pc bangs you can here three different games and two or three songs at the same time. All these places have headphone sets and it would be so easy to enforce a rule that you use them, but no, they'd rather enjoy the wonderful effect created when five different sounds mix together ... |

I was once in Big Mart. The guy was screaming his head off over a loudspeaker that the bananas were delecious. I walk up to him. He has the mike in hand. I cover both ears, look him in the eye and say, "Hagima Mitchigetta". Silence for about 10 minutes.

Sometimes I can't believe my husband's tolerance for bad quality (tinny, poor reception, treble turned too high) music in the.
I agree on you with the noise pollution. Hate it. |

Its dissapointing somehow. Before I ventured out here to the mystical, medetational far east, I expected the oriental people to be a deeply spiritual and respectful people.
But no, they are materialistic and noisy beyond imagination, and a person is not allowed a moments peace and quiet for even a moment, or they are freaks. |

There's a 'newbie' f-teacher at our haggie, and he has 'just arrived' observations. He said that the supermarket is 'SO noisy'. I didn't know what he meant and he said there was a guy talking on a mike. I guess it was the fish (or produce, or whatever) barker commanding customers to come over, like squid attracted to a bright light, in this case a blare of noise.
He's a funny guy, the 'newbie'. He's 23, never been in Korea, never taught English before. So he's supernice and perky except for one detail. He whistles the tune from Kill Bill. You know, the female assassin with the eye patch disguised as a nurse. Carrying a tray on which is a poison injection, and she's whistling down the hall.
It's like he's SO NICE all the time. Yet he always whistles the 'Kill Bill' tune.
Like he really, under all the gopher niceties, wants to kill the boss |

You know... I often wonder how this country just doesn't implode on itself. I mean it just doesn't work out the same. Take the people across the hall from me. They've got three kids and a baby and mum and dad all in a small three bedroom apartment.
There's two heavy doors between us but I can still hear them. I reckon they just have no space from birth, don't expect anyone else to be quiet and just carry that through.
I'm suprised everyone just doesn't go postal. |

Not if you are a dirty foreigner. The amount of times I have been told to be quiet on a subway or bus when talking normally to a friend is amazing. However, if you are a drunken ajoshi who frequents the many bars opposite my old appartment, you have the right to scream, fight, belch, pi55 and f#rt to your hearts content all night.
Cheers

| I started a herb garden recently, and I've really been getting into learning about them and taking care of them. I think what I like best about these plants is that THEY DON'T MAKE ANY NOISE! |
