[quote="paperbag princess"]korea is the anti-fashion.
i have never, ever seen so many poorly dressed people in one place. it blows my mind when i see women my age dressing in moo-moos that my grandmother wouldn't wear. plaid with polkadots and stripes, shoes that look like castaways from a 1980's trailpark and BAD, BAD hair; the fashion police could spend years giving tickets! just because a korean fashion rag says it's cool, doesn't mean it is. just because gucci's runway models wear it, doesn't mean you should buy the knock-off version!!!! |
I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. Your post has astounded me. |
are you blind? what astounds you about it?
ps i dig the uggs, they are significantly cooler than the crappy, too-small high-heels that i see people wearing. |

Newbie
In the last 2 years I've only spent a month in Canada, so, looking around now at the latest fashions I've been thinking: is this stuff cool in the west these days or is it just a Koren thing. Here are a few specific questions:
1. Is it fashionable for men to wear silk scarves tied in a little knot and flaring out to the side? |
This one I haven't seen.

| 2. Is pink back in for men? (Don Johnson and his Miam Vice buddies would be so happy) |
Pink is back for men, in the west, big time. There was even an article in the Sunday New York Times about some rapper who aided the pink comeback, and is now trying to move on the something new.
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/10/17/fashion/17CAMR.html
"Cam was the first hard-core rapper to rock pink," said Emil Wilbekin, a former editor in chief of Vibe magazine, who is now an executive at the fashion house Marc Ecko. "What was interesting was how quickly the streets caught on." Sonya Magett, a stylist and photographer for the fashion magazine Suede, said that pink on men "was considered very strange in the urban market" when Mr. Giles began wearing it, but today it is common.

| 3. Are women really dressing like they're in a Molly Ringwald movie? |
Oh yes, the eighties are back in the west. Frills, curls, asymetry, etc.

| 4. The pony tail to the side. Don't get me wrong, it looks good, but how come everyone is combing their hair like my grade 2 girlfriend? |
Looked bad then, not much better now. But hairstyles of the commercial fad sort always suck.

| 5. This one really bugs me cuz Korean women usually look so great in their high heels. But, what's up with those nasty, tan-colored, Eskimo style boots? I don't think I've ever been turned off a Korean women but seeing those things attached to them just kills it all. |
Uggs and moonboots are all the rage. There was a spread on moonboots in the last Sunday's Sunday Styles in the New York Times, also. Cameron Diaz is credited with the Uggs craze.

| 6. Then of course, the mullet. A constant source of laughs. |
Saw a ton of them in Australia last summer, but anyone sporting one should be tied down and shorn (fad hairdos always suck!).
By the way, snag the Hello Kitty and Disney stuff while you can- it is getting big in the States since Paris Hilton started sporting it.
Don't be so glib about Korean fashion- a lot of it is cool, and being picked up on in the west. Now, ajumas in Burburry pants and red plaid shirts, that is another story. |

There's world cool, and then there's Korean cool.
What gets me is the hairstyles a lot of the guys sport. I mean, they must have to sit in a salon for hours to fix up those 'doos. That level of attention and dedication to one's follicles is alarming. Are these the same guys who are supposed to defend the country if a million of those steel-eyed, arse kickin' North Korean boys come goose stepping across the border?! |

Fortunately, no. The ones with the pretty hair are either pre or post military. |

| pop psychology time- the lads spend so much time on their hair because they're forced to wear it in one particular way for 23 months and want to rebel against that when they get out of the service. |

Yeah. I know whenever I'm feeling rebellious I head straight to the beauty parlour for a few hours of teasing and tinting. |

| These things are cyclical. Hello Kitty is trending back. I have lots of ideas of what fashion is- both high and pop. And Korean. |

Check shirts and cheap denim shorts or overalls isn't it? The farmboy look. |

Fashion is not important.
But, what really turns chicks on is when men wear sunglasses and a five o'clock facial stubble.
If you really want to pick a woman up at a bar, remember that it always makes them hot when men where striped ties with plaid pants.
If that doesn't work talk to them about the engine on your car back home.
It works everytime. |
