| Any comments on my numbers ? |
I'm speaking from absolute ignorance here, but I think the site incurs HUGE bandwidth charges, even though there's very little graphic-intensive stuff anywhere on the site. And I'm not just talking about the job/discussion forums. I went exploring a few months ago through the student sections and was amazed at how extensive it is. Look at this list and you'll see how far it goes, and that's just the forums. That's not including all the grammar and idea sections. We tend to think this Korea board is Dave's ESL, but in reality we occupy but a tiny corner of the whole Eslcafe site.
I think it's a great thing that he's been able to keep the site for 7 years and never have to resort to spam mail or (ugh!) pop-up ads.
By the way, here are two other recent interviews:

This second one specifically discusses the Korea forum, though it's a bit obsolete now as it addresses the workings of the "old" board, which is now ancient history. For example, all 10 current moderators are either current or past ESL teachers in Korea. According to this interviewer, none of the old ones were.

Read an interview with Dave Sperling. It's dated April of this year and is a little short but I thought you guys may find it interesting.

What surprises you about ESL teachers on your website?
I'm surprised at some of the anger of the teachers, especially those posting on my Korean Job Discussion Forum. I'm also surprised that my site has spawned a few romances, including two marriages |

I just want to know what the hell Sperling has against the plural of breast (breasts) but seem to find the word breast acceptable! Someone should ask him that! |

| Dave was astute enough to see a niche and fill it, and in retrospect I wish I'd thought of it myself. And while he might appear to be full of himself by posting his mug-shot on the title page, that seems not to be the case. When I had problems logging on, he took a personal interest in my dilemma, and solved it. Perhaps it's his Mia Thai that keeps him grounded; I know it works for me. Here's to Dave. |
