I've never really tried it before...Well ok as a kid but nothing serious.
I am living in the Anyangsi area and there is an archery range not far from my house. I thought I would walk up and check it out. I walked to where it should be and there is a long gated driveway and you can't really get a peek.
I could be the weird foreigner and just walk in and pretend like I don't understand...(well actually I'm not sure that would take much pretending...) but I would rather find out if there is a way I can take lessons or whatever the heck it is you do at a range.
I've asked around with several Koreans but no one really seems to have an answer for me..(without doing research.)
Any others in the Anyangsi area managed to get any archery in?
Taking Gum Do and loving it. I think I have my yellow belt test next week. I'm such an uncoordinated *beep*. |

The range sounds like it belongs to a private club. If it doesn't, please let me know as I will definitely make the trip there.
There sure does seem to be an element of mystery surrounding the sport here. I taught someone about two years ago who was on the Korean olympic team in '84. She took me to this workshop way out in the sticks where there was no public transport, and helped me order a custom made hunting bow. The whole operation looked kind of exclusive. I remember her asking me with a concerned expression if I had found anywhere to practice. I didn't realise it at the time, but now I understand that she looked concerned because it actually isn't easy to find such a place! |

Just as a follow-up I haven't found out any in about archery but I did manage to pass the first test in Gumdo. (Screwed up the forms a little but I did manage to get the yellow belt)
hehe...most of the kids I teach ESL are probably almost blackbelts so it is a little deflating but I am still excited.
Training with Head master : Gwag Chang Gu (I think that is it anyway.)
He is the head of the federation for the region.
Great guy even with the language barrier. |

At the big fleamarket at Dongdaemun exit 6 I've seen the old style bones made of wood and bone laminate, all curled up until they're strung. Short, not tall, bows. And had a hankering to try it out, archery, especially with such an historic style bow.
I know a guy who has his bow and arrows and a styrofoam fishfloat for a target, all stashed in a hiding spot in the woods. So he just hikes up into the middle of nowhere and sets up for some archery. |
