Debate Surrounds Deportation of Foreign AIDS Patients
According to the immigration law, foreigners infected with AIDS are barred from entering the nation, and if foreigners residing in Korea are discovered to have AIDS, they could be deported. An Immigration Bureau official said, "The health of the citizens comes first, and it's obligatory to isolate those infected with AIDS."

How profoundly backwards. I bet they think it's foreigners bringing all the AIDS in too. Of course, it could have absolutely nothing to do with Korean businessmen and thier trips to Thailand for some "R and R". |

I may be incorrect, but I'm sure if you were seeking residency for NZ also you'd have to undergo a medical and could be refused the visa if you tested positive for AIDS, Hep, TB etc. Same for most OECD countries actually. |

That might be true, but my guess is that if diagnosed with aids inside the country one would not be deported. |

Actually I think you're right, once you have the residency you can get all the diseases you like. |

Is anyone against this??? That is a very sensible policy. I wish my own country would do it too! |

I think its a great idea. At the current time Korea has a fairly low HIV rate. Any sensible action taken to keep it this way should have positive effects for the country. Korea has very poor sexual education in their schools and the last thing this country needs is a massive AIDS problem similar to that of other countries in the region. If I was diagnosed with HIV and then deported I certainly would not hold any illwill towards this policy. |

Korea has a low incidence for now.....10 years down the road will be a different story...condom use among Korean men is about 12% and if they aren't using 'em here at home they sure aren't using 'em in Bangkok, Pattaya, Angeles City, Phnom Phen, and all the other sex hot spots in Asia.....
sad thing is all the inocent wives and girlfriends who will be afflicted because of their men's stupidity....
but, oh I forgot..........all they need to do is eat kim chi and all will be oaky |

I am also not so much against this policy. But then again, I am.
Maybe every country in the world would like AIDS infected people just to disappear, and hide the problem, hoping it will go away. The fact is, if someon has HIV or AIDS and he/she is promiscuous, then the problem will just occur somewhere else.
Also, I resent the implication that it is held and spread by foreign people. The way things are going, Korea's rate will top the west's pretty soon. |

Right now Canada is having a debate about this policy. Where people from Africa and Caribean nations are bringing AIDs into the country, without our gov't knowledge.
Now there are two trains of thought. Should they be barred from entering or deported? Or does our gov't ,which professes to lead the fight against Aids among Africans, have a moral responsibility to help these infected people.
I will provide a link later. |

So, your riding to work on your little 125cc bike and get hit by an ajuma talking on a handphone while trying to drive.
You get transported to the local hospital. You've lost a lot of blood, externally and/or internally, so they decide to hook you up with a couple of pints of blood products. You know, since they don't readily accept blood product donations from dirty foreigners, and all blood is tested to the highest degree, or so you've been told, everything will be okay.
Unfortunately for you the blood products they gave you came from the last batch of "bad stuff' from the Korean Red Cross, blood bank, etc.. Golly gosh, you had read about a problem with the blood supply in Korea just a few short months ago. Darn it all to heck, you wind up becoming HIV positive from the transfussion of Korean blood products, given to you by a Korean hospital, after having been hit by a Korean driver, in Korea.
Well, after you test positive, do they assume all responsibility, give you an F5 visa and all kinds of money or......... do they brand you an "evil foreigner", "sex fiend", etc., who is forced to leave Korea with the words "Kick him/her out now!! We must protect Korea!! It's a great idea!" ringing in your ears.
Not all infections are due to unprotected sex or other high risk behavior on the part of the person infected.
Yeah, kick them all out, another great idea.
Do you really believe, in the above hypothetical scenario, they would let the foreigner stay in country and risk the future of innocent Ehwa princesses [insert sarcasm here]? Or, would they deny responsibility and say you must have contracted it from your deviant sexual behavior. It just can't be the Korean systems fault!!! |

If you are going to toss out a number, why not stay in context and toss out the number that shows what percentage of Korean men use condoms when employing a prostitute instead of using the number that includes all sexual activity (including people who are married and are using other forms of birth control)? |

Diseases like HIV= drain on the public health system. Why should taxpayers be paying for treatment of non citizens? Many countries deny residency if you fail a health test for that very reason. |
